I was working 40 + hours a week for about 9 months at a job where I was very stressed and kind of unhappy. Then I decided to go back to school to get my Masters and I asked my boss if he'd be OK with me only working at the minimum 30 hours a week to go to school (I always end up with about 32 hours). He said that was OK, and if it presented a problem they would let me know and give me sufficient time to find another job. Nobody has said anything to me so far.
My classes end this week and I have not decided if I am going to take Fall classes or night classesbut the thing is, EVEN if I don't take classes, I do not want to have to work 40+ hours a week. I am content, no I am very sa at 30, My husband and I are making enough money. I am soooooo much more happy with 30 hours, and I feel better, I've stopped ripping out my nails and hair, I am eating better and just MUCH happier.

Tell the truth.

He was OK for you to work 30 hours.

You might have changed your mind about school, that's a simple fact.

Maybe the 30 hours actually suits them. Perhaps you do the same amount of work and cost them less.

A good employee is usually accomodated.

I completely understand your situation. You don't want to hate your job; stress can cause a myraid of health problems. (It has for me prior to quitting my job and finding another with reduced hours). Since you are financially able to do so, I would keep the 30 hours and not tell your boss that you aren't taking any classes. (Or I would keep taking the classes because a Master's degree gives you an advantage these days.) Stick with the 30 hours, and good luck!

Nothing beats an honest conversation.
Just inform your boss that you are not sure that you are/will take a Fall course, that you want to let him know.
You would like to contimue on a 30 hour basis.
Also, let him know that you are available for extra hours if the need arises, but you prefer 30 hours on a regular basis.

If you want to be honest tell the employer what you told us, if you want to have to make up some lie when they might ask then just let it go like it is.
