I'm about a 2-5 on that scale. I think we need to first lock down our borders and then examine everyone who is here illegally to determine if they are living off our society, harming our society or if they are contributing to our society.

If you have a job and have not tried to sponge off our society, there should be an expedited process to become legal and you pay a fine for breaking our laws if you want to stay here. If you are currently a productive person, but when you came over you sponged off our society, you should be given a choice to pay back any benefits you received illegally and work through the system to be legal (including paying the fine for breaking our immigration laws) or go home.

If we determine that you are here and are only mooching off of our society, don't let the door hit ya. And if we do a background check and you have any sort of criminal background, here or in your homeland, you're gone, gone, gone.

I'm firmly a 1 on that scale.

Any compromise of the law just encourages illegal immigration. Those worthy of being here will respect our laws, go through the proper screening, and enter the correct way.

I may feel some level of sympathy for those in other nations who want to illegally enter the U.S., but I put a far greater priority on the laws, security interests, and sovereignty of the United States, and the rights of people who vote and pay taxes in this country.

One .. I don't know what exemptions an illegal would have if they've broken our laws and spit on our Constitution. Life is unfair. And no one is special or above the law.

If I broke the law as a citizen, I'm sure I would be punished. And no one would care about my "circumstances".

It's not harsh, it's reality.

Probably an 8. I'm not for free blanket amnesty, they're not going away and deporting them is not a reality, but rewarding law breakers is wrong. They should be penalized somehow (starting with the enforcement of our laws).

I'm illegal immigrant and I'm at 6 too. Those who crossed borders illegally I would sent home. Those like me who had temp visa and just because 9/11 were no way to renew them (so I overstayed) I would let them pay fines and get them way to go for green card and citizenship. Not all illegals in US are Mexican or Latinos who are crossing borders.

ONE

Who plans to pay for these extensive background checks on 20-30 million law breakers?

I am a one. Sorry about the circumstances , breaking the law and stealing from the American public deserves this strong reaction.

I'm at at 8.
I don't think illegals who have been conributing to society and living in the states should be deported.
Yes, I don't think immigrants who are not doing anything to better themselves should stay. If they would rather join gangs and steal cars, let them try it elsewhere.
