Actually, a good scope should be a little hard on your wallet. Look for quality scopes on sale, rather than the "el cheapo" supremes. Just about all scope manufacturers make good glass, but stay away from their bottom line stuff. The Simmons Aetec is a good scope, their 40 dollar pro hunter typically is not. The same goes for tasco and bushnell. Plan on dropping at least 125 to 150 bucks and you'll be fine. You can also save your money for a while and get a vari-x II leopould, typically 200-225 dollars. Generally it makes no sense to put a 40 dollar scope on a four hundred dollar rifle. You can better rationalize putting a 300 dollar scope on a 400 dollar rifle, as this is an investment in long-term performance. Remember, you don't get precision without spending a few dollars.

I understand "hard on your wallet." Let me just say this. If you have a decent rifle and a poor quality scope that you bought to save money the only person you will hurt is yourself.
When it comes to scopes regardless of brand, you are going to get exactly what you pay for..buy cheap...get cheap!
You should avoid any Chinese or Russian imports N.C. Star, Kahles,Sightron,Barska...all garbage and a waste of money.
Stick with name brands like Simmons,Weaver,Burris and Nikon as mid-range level scopes and look to spend about $100 to $150 for a decent one that will last long and hold up to the constant recoil of your rifle. You can always upgrade to a Leupold,Swarovski or higher end scopes later as you get more experience with a scoped rifle. Go to a store and look at their stock personally, I would suggest Dick's Sporting Goods, Cabelas Sporting Goods, Sports Authority, Bass Pro Shops..All of these stores have good inventory that you would find suitable to buy your scope from, that will fit your needs and budget. You can also get any questions you may have answered on the spot at the same time.Once you've seen and handle them, you will have a better idea exactly what you want and need. You can also buy many of these scopes on-line if there are none of these distributors near where you live. Good Luck!

It’s all on how you define “hard on the wallet”, any scope that has a Limited Lifetime Warranty is hard on the wallet because you will be buying another scope soon.
When you see just how limited they really are.
Where as Leopold and a few others have a Lifetime Full Replacement Warranty, with that you get it fixed or a new scope at no cost to you.

Buy one scope and it last a lifetime.
Or
Buy a cheap scopes and have to replace it as needed.

You have to watch out these days there is a lot of crap out there.I ushally buy used Leopolds they are good as new if they ever break you can send them back and they will fix it or give you a reconditoned I allready recived a new one.I probly sent them 5 scopes in the past 10 years.I will somtimes buy broken ones from people who dont know about this.If you cant afford a Leopold.Burris makes good scopes that are not as expensive.I bought this really nice Romanian scope at a flea market I put it on my 10/22 and it shoots great.I am looking for another scope like it now.

For me the scope is as important as the rifle. Quality optics always pay off.
leupold make a quality scope. I'm quite fond of the VX-L 3.5-10x50.
If your based in the States it will be cheaper than here in the UK.

IMNSHO, you can never go wrong with a Leupold. Not exactly inexpensive, but less expensive than some. Great clarity and quality.

On the cheap end, Simmons makes some decent scopes.
