I sold a car the other day to a couple in their 20's. I listed in the newspaper that it had some rust and had a leaking power steering pump. Now they call back saying they want their money back because there's a rust hole they found and they got an estimate for $1,000. When they were looking at it I had gone in the house assuming they checked it really good. The guy was checking lights etc. I assumed they had read it had rust, etc. My husband says give them $200.00 back. I put "AS-IS" on the title. I feel bad because they're young. The car runs excellent and they drove it around. I don't want to give the money back because I put it as "AS-IS".

Thanks everyone. They had looked at the car for over an hour and a half too. I even said I'll let you guys talk it over for awhile, That was about 30 minutes. The whole transaction was about 2 hours. All new stuff two in the car like battery, rebuilt tranny, Air, muffler and pipe, and numerous other things. Like I said I stated"Rust" in the ad. Thanks everyone I feel better.

If you are a person selling a private car, and you list it "as is", then you have no obligations on the car once the buyers take ownership.
They bought a used car and this is now totally their responsibility. If you want to be charitable, you can give them something back, but there is no legal or moral reason why you have to do that.

As-is means just that. Tell them to leave you alone. They had every chance to do a proper inspection. You divulged enough information about the car to feel ok about the sale. They're young and they learned a good lesson about used car buying. Nuff said!

If you put the car as-is then they have a car and don't worry about it, you gave them some money back that was good enough , When buying a used car It will aways be as-is except when buying at a dealer or car lot , Don't worry about it , If they need to go to court let it be they will loose hope this helps.

I agree with the first answer. You sold it as-is. They looked at it. You even put in the newspaper that it had some rust. A deal is a deal.

As is is really as is. You do not owe them anything back.
It would be different if you mis represented the car, but they had ample time to check it out and I would have assumed that you would have let a mechanic of their choice check it out.
They can take you to court, but I doubt they will since it says as is.
If they want to go to court, do Judge Judy or People's Court.

You sold the car as is with no implied warranty if you givr them $200.00 you have just created an open end warranty.Don't give there money back the car was probably cheap to begin with, just say no.

You don't have to give them one cent of their money back. Used car sales are always "as-is", and you even went as far as stating it on the title. It's the buyer's responsibility to determine the condition of a vehicle before buying it.

They have learned a valuable lesson, that "as is" means just that. You owe them nothing, they are over 18, and made an informed decision to buy without checking things they could have found. Wish them well, remind them it was sold as is, and send them on their way.

They expected a perfect car for TWO HUNDRED BUCKS!!! Guess they believe in Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy too. You don't have to make any refund. They should consider the $200 as part of their tuition in the school of life.
