I like to add a little Kahlua or Bailey's Irish Cream to my Pepsi or other caffinated soda while I work. I may drink 4 sodas at work. What I usually do is open the can and drink a little, then add some. I do not add any more than that. I usually do this with every pepsi, wild cherry pepsi, coke, etc.
Its extremely rare I drink at home and the only reason I have this stuff at home is so I can bring it to work in a flask. I usually don't even drink when I am out with friends being I enjoy being the designated driver.
I drink at work because I work with developly challenged children. It helps me feel more balanced. I don't think the amount of alcohol I drink, which may equal 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 shots throughout a 10 hour period is a problem. I am not an alcoholic.
My boss knows now & she said if I do not stop drinking at work, she will recommend me for suspension until I go to an alcohol treatment program. I don't think its any of her business. Anyone agree?

Not sure what to say... You seriously need help. My father would always come home from work and have just a drink. No big deal, we tghought since he wouldn't get drunk or anything. Well to make long story short he is now in AA. There are different degrees of alcoholism and feeling the need to have a drink everyday even if it's 1/4oz for whatever reason, is described as a form of alcoholism.
Don't feel we're here to critizice you but looking at this from the outside it is very clear no doubt that you do have an alcohol problem. And yes it is 100% your boss's business

I'm sorry to say that I totally agree with your boss. Even if you drink half a shot of alcohol it is still considered drinking on the job. Especially when working with children there is no excuse! It's just not safe and not professional at all. What do you do if a kids gets hold of your soda and has a sip of it or if something happens to a child (god forbid) and they smell alcohol in your breath, find it in your locker etc.
Try to find other ways to balance the stress, use aromatherapy for an example put a drop of essential oil on a tissue and keep with you to sniff whenever you need to. If you have to work in an air conditioned or stuffy building, using essential oils in a diffuser or spritzing a spritzer can really clear the air. Geranium, Lavender, Lemon, Peppermint and Rosemary are all excellent for a quick pick me up. Try Chamomile, Lavender, Orange or Sandalwood oil. All are thought to help combat stress and tension.
Alcohol and medication should never be the answer to make the job easier.
Good luck

You keep mentioning that you only drink when you are at work. It does NOT matter WHERE you drink its the fact that you do every day. Preferably you should drink at home when you are not supervising mentally challenged kids. Honestly if I were your boss I would fire you. I dont give a rat's as* if you think it makes you feel "balanced" becuase it still compromises some of your abilities, one of them is to thnik straight. If you want to feel balanced take yoga. You are out of your mind if you think bringing a flask to work with little kids is acceptable. How can you think that out of all the people in the worl who drink you are the ONLY one to not be affected by it. Stop being so naive. Itsa vry irresponisble for you to even THINK it is okay. You drink EVERYday. You may be a functioning alcoholic but nevertheless you are STILL an alcoholic. I don't know wat else to tell you becaue you OBVIOUSLY don't see it. But what will you do when a challenged kid drinks your soda becuase he felt like it. Or even better if something were to happen to them, whether your fault or not, now your boss knows you drink, so if something were to happen you'll be the first to be tested for alcohol use or drug use and being that you drinik everyday you can find yourself with a serious problem on your hands. Grow up, and drink at home, stop drinking on the job, stop putting other people in danger.

If you feel you need somethign to balance out your stress level or relax you some at work - you should see a doctor about some anti-anxiety medication or something.... or lay off the caffeine!!
Yes your boss is correct ... if its so little as you claim, then just stop - if you can't then you do need treatment!! And yes it is her business, because she is responsible for having you be w/ those kids. If something happens to one of them in your care, and alcohol can be remotely contributed to the problem/situation, and she knew about it - it's her *** on the line!!
You're balancing a stimulant with a depressant - caffeine w/ alcohol.
Either stop or get a new job.

OK... 1/2 Vodka 1/2 Kahlua Poured into a glass of crushed ice. Great Black Russian. 6 parts gin 1 part dry Martini Straight up in a cocktail glass with a twist of lemon peel. Have your gin and glasses in the freezer and your Martini in the fridge and make sure the lemon peel oils hit the top of the drink. Classic Dry Martini. 1 part Whisky 3 parts Baileys Poured over ice is a good drink too. Don't try them all at the same time. lol Cheers.

No- definitely do not agree - you are working with impaired individuals when you yourself are impaired- what if something happened to one of the people in your care - if you ar found to be under the influence you are NEGLIGENT - you could and should be charged - You say you don't drink at home or when out - that's the only place you should- If you feel you need to drink at work maybe you should take a hard look at yourself and figure out why - you should probably find another job.

you are either making up a great big story or you are pretty darn dumb. I don't think there is any job in the world out there that would allow you to do this. You should have been FIRED immediately upon your bosses knowledge of this. especially working with kids. If this is true, and if I had kids there, and I found out, you and your boss would get fired. I trully hope this is a lie.

I think it is 100% your boss's business that you are drinking on the job around challenged children. It's your boss's butt on the line if something happens while you are clocked in; whether you are legally drunk or not, the courts will only see that your boss knowingly employed someone who was drinking on the job.
I wouldn't leave my kids with you if I knew you were drinking even that small amount.
Edit to add: FYI You only drinking at work IS the problem, dim-bulb!

You can't drink while at work I'm sorry but your boss has every right to tell you that you can't. That is what your private residence is for. You're lucky you were not fired.

,You are a liability. If one of those children were injured or became ill you and your employer could be sued. Someone will smell alcohol on your breath sooner or later. Someone will find it sooner or later.
You do have a problem. You need this to help you cope at work. If you feel that drinking at work is OK because you are stressed this proves that indeed you have a drinking problem.
Get help.
