Here is my situation. His two kids from a previous marriage do not live with us.He is in very close contact.
We have a very good relationship. So, if kids live with their mother and they only come to visit and we have holidays together does that make me their step mother?

TERRATAD, you are wrong. I have a very optimistic view of the situation. They are great kids and I am more than willing to make this work for everybody. Just wanted to clarify the "step mom concept"

It doesn't really matter the closeness of the relationship or not or how often they visit. If you are married to the guy, then technically, they are your step-children. Not to be judgmental but it sounds like you kind of have a pessimistice view of the situation, like you are trying to distance or unconnect yourself from the kids in some way. I'm very sorry if I'm wrong, but if I'm not, why would you feel that way? They are part of someone you love very much.

If a woman marries a man who has children from a previous relationship that woman becomes their step-mother regardless of how much time the kids spend with them.

I think it's like that old saying about dads... You know "Anyone can be a father, but it takes someone special to be a daddy"

Same goes for stepparenting... All you have to do to be a stepparent is to marry a child's parent. It takes something special to be a stepmom or stepdad, though.

So, technically, because you are married to the children's father, you are their stepmother. From this point forward, though, the relationship is up to you & the kids (and your husband, to some extent). You get to make it whatever you want it to be.

When she marries a guy who has children then she becomes a step mother. Same thing with a step father. When he marries a woman who has children then he is the step father.

It doesn't matter who the children live with. You automatically become a step mother when you marry the father of the children.

You are a step mother only if you are married to the father.

You became the step-mom as soon as you established a permanent relationship with their father or accepted the kids as part of your family.
