You're right.
And one needs to study comparatively as well.
Studying only one's own religion will only serve to breed generations of ignorance.

To FULLY understand, yes. I believe to have a conversation about a particular religion you should have SOME understanding of it, I don't think you need to be versed in that religion with years of practice. Now to be an expert and speak about it on National Geographic then I would suggest years of practicing and "mastering"(bad word usage but I couldn't think of another this early in the morn) that religion.

To the contrary... understanding religion takes all of 15 seconds. Here it is, in a nut-shell:
'Belief' is an insidious mind-killer... it cuts one off from the open-minded and intellectually honest consideration of alternative possibilities.
'Faith' (magical, wishful thinking) is a lame and pathetic substitute for 'evidence'.
Faith-based 'belief' (the internalized certainty that you are privy to the 'truth' pertaining to vital aspects of existence and reality) is a lame and pathetic substitute for 'knowledge'... in fact, it is the ILLUSION of knowledge.
Faith + belief ---> Self-delusion and willful ignorance.
Of course, becoming familiar with the different variations of delusion can be tedious and time-consuming... but if you understand what I just wrote, then you understand religion.

"The greatest obstacle to discovery is not ignorance... it is the illusion of knowledge." ~ Daniel Boorstin

To REALLY understand a religion you must be privy to the obscene crimes of its leaders.
