A 72 'vert would be on a Super Beetle platform. If the pan is shot, you can try to find another Super Beetle pan. Any year from '71-79 should work. The only thing is, you'd have to weld in the reinforcement channels behind the rocker panels. These add extra strength to the chassis for when the top is down.
JCWhitney or any of the suppliers found in magazines like VWTrends carry enough replacement body panels to get the uppers back in shape.

Schizophen.... has the general idea... Only VWTrends Magazine is no longer in publication. We only have Hot VW's to read now.
CIP1.com has every part you need. If the pan is salvageable, you can replace rusted out pan bottoms with weld in pans available at CIP1. Everything is available for a 72 there except the convertible top frame. You'll have to get this restored somewhere or get a replacement from another car (71 and 72 are compatible years on the convertible top parts). I've found several places using google, that can restore convertible top frames or replace them. Another valuable source for hard to find parts is www.thesamba.com. This site has everything for bugs.

Most 1972 convertables were Super Bettles and strut front suspension you cannot get parts for. Regular bugs with the axle beam front suspension could be valuable. And I would reccomend a trip to mexico to find a chassis pan and new rebuild parts to restore thae bug back exactly like it should be stock. A fully restored Bug convertable should be worth more than the restoration cost and fun to do because the VW is so simple.

If it's got MAJOR rust,it would be easiest to buy a rolling chasse. There's only a few bolts around the underside edge that holds the body to the frame.

jcwhitney.com. They sell the under pans and whatnot that seem to rust the most.
