I would think that either they're discovered a new "lifetime dream" or they've sold themselves short. In the case of the former scenario, being with their partner has superceded the importance of their previous goal and their priorities have shifted; in the case of the second scenario, their priorities remain the same but they sacrifice their dream to stay with their partner because the two objectives are (for whatever reason) incompatible. From the outside looking in, you'd never be able to tell which thing you were witnessing because they both play out the same way, but one way is likely to produce happiness and fulfillment, the other way is likely to produce regret.
