At night Rockefeller Plaza lights up and there are still folks mingling around. The ESB closes at night.

Both offer great views of the city - I'll be interested to see if others have a distinct preference. The ESB is open from 8:00AM to 2:00AM 365 days a year. It costs about $18 to go to the 86th floor observation deck (where you can go outside) and another $15 to go up to the 102nd floor. There are often long lines and for $45 you can buy a ticket that bypasses the lines. The Rockefeller rooftop is called Top of the Rock. It's on the 67th to 70th floors and is a bit more upscale than ESB but you're not up as high. It costs $17.50 and you can buy tickets with a designated entry time in advance on their website or on site at the box office (8:00AM to 10:50PM).
