I haven't been to Turkey, but lived in the UK
I think they biggest difference would be the question of identity. In Turkey, Islam is the dominant faith, so people don't have to cling to Islam for their identity. In the UK, Muslims are in the minority--a minority that is often viewed with suspicion if not out right persecution. Also, in the UK, Muslims margnalized not only culturally but by actual ghettoization (I mean that in the academic sense not in a perjurative sense.) As a result, there is a more of a push to find identity....and when minority ethnic groups find identity they often do so by going to extremes in contrast to the dominant culture. By doing so, they validate their own view point by highlighting the negatives of the dominant group. Also, having a common dress reenforces the group identity.

Turkey is a Muslim country but with a secular past. Kamal Ataturk brought this idea to the country. He understood the need to become more secular for the country to survive. Still, the conservative Muslim political group won the elections last time, so we will see how this affects the country. In the UK, there is more freedom for the Muslims to dress the way they want. Maybe they could take that idea of some freedom for the minority religion back to their home countries and we would stop having other religions persecuted in their countries.

I don't think Turkey is a Muslim country. Yes, there are a lot of Muslims there, but the majority are Turks, who are not ALL Muslims. Also, Islam is the same anywhere in this world (especially those who follow Islam exactly) as they follow the same book, the Qur'an.

First of all I'm so glad that your son enjoyed your trip and found Turks good people.
As a Turkish Muslim I can clearly say that the majority of Turks are Muslim((Sunni like Saudis). The difference is that we have a secular country means if you want cover yourself up,do it .Yes there ar some strictments about it though like public schools and universities you can't wear veil.
Hope this helps.
P:S: Why don't you come and see yourself?

Turkey, which is a Muslim country, forbids and objects to any public display of Muslim dress. England, with a Muslim minority, are more liberal on the issue of dress code, and many Muslims in England insist on Muslim dress, a sign of their uniqueness.

Turkey is a country torn between the Middle East and Europe, not just geographically, but culturally as well.
Allthough they are majority Muslim, they want to be associated with Europe rather than the Middle East (who wouldn't?)
There is a backlash by a vocal minority there who would rather they adhere more to the backward ways of Islamic theocracy.

The majority of Muslims in Turkey are like the majority of Chritians in the west they do not practise their religion in the way Allah(God ) told them to in their Quran(Bible). If they did they wouldn;t go to Nightclubs, women wouldn;t walk about uncovered, they wouldn;t drink etc.etc Basically they (majority muslims and christians in both countries) do not understand the religions theyprofess to belong to.
