I understand that it is some sort of split personality syndrome. But how exactly a person with schitzophrenia behaves

Hi!

Though the word schizophrenia translates as "split personality", that is not a good description of the illness. There are a range of symptoms, including:

Paranoia
Delusions
Hallucinations
Hearing voices

Most people have traits that fall on the schizophrenia spectrum and a diagnosis is reached after carefully weighing the persons situation and establishing that they have a significant combination of symptoms on the spectrum. Few people diagnosed would have all the traits, so there is no exactly about how they behave.

Symptoms of schizophrenia can be induced by some drugs, including marijuana. In some cases the symptoms will disappear if the drug is not used for a while, though they can linger long after habitual usage.

Hope this helps.

Good wishes.

Some of the people above have this mixed up.

Schizophrenia, despite its name, has nothing to do with any splits. It is a malfunction of the brain chemistry which usually manifests in the late teens to early twenties. It is manifested by two types of behaviors:
Positive signs: visual & auditory hallucinations
misperceptions of reality
delusional thinking, like delusions of grandeur or delusions of persecution

Negative signs: social withdrawal
lack of hygiene
stopping work & school participation
poor cognition

It is treatable by antipsychotic medications. Talk therapy is helpful, but is not required, for the disorder.

The OTHER thing, like Sybil, which is more of a "split", is dissociation, mostly seen in Dissociative Identity Disorder, previously called Multiple Personality Disorder.

In it, the child, usually quite intelligent and hypnotizable, is severely and repeatedly traumatized over a long time in the preschool years, usually sexually. The traumatized "part" of the mind is repressed into "unconsciousness", leaving a conscious, depressed "host". The other parts, or alter personalities, come out at times and act in the stead of the host, oftentimes leaving the host with amnesia for the episode. THAT is what Sybil had.

MPD, or DID, is treated WITHOUT medication, except for the depression. It is a NEUROSIS, not a psychosis. It is treated with talk therapy, hypnotherapy, EMDR, and/or art or sandtray therapy. It does not require hospitalization, except for suicidal episodes. It is highly treatable if diagnosed in childhood. It is usually misdiagnosed 7-8 times, before the true diagnosis is discovered.

Schizophrenia is another way of saying you are mentally out of touch with reality, and different personalities take over to deal with what they perceive as reality.
