I'm Christian, and I don't hate Harry Potter, because despite the fact that it has witchcraft, it's FICTION. Not only that, but it's neat, and the story often involves morals.
Fundamentalists (Super Christians) hate Harry Potter because they honestly believe that the fictional witchcraft featured in it will have some sort of demonic influence on young, impressionable children. Yeah. Right.

You will always find some religious people who overreact on movies, stories, books, related somehow in the spirituality.
When they did The Davinci Code movie, i received some mails about how bad is the movie, how that movie made damage to the catholic churche image, and that we, as catholic shouldn't watch the movie or read the book.
I guess they skip the fact that all those stories are fiction, and maybe they have this fear, wich migth have some basis, that there exists people who will take it literally, and take those stories as facts.
The problem with Harry Potter is that they use the witches and wizards immage, wich were a reality some day in the world, and they were hunted by the church since they relate all of them with dark magic.
Even in this days, there exists people who really practice some kind of magic -i'm not completely exceptical about it, altougth i haven't really be in touch with such a thing.
Anyway, those are the basis on their hate and fear, but we all should be aware on what fiction and what reality is, and to teach young people to understand the diference. And that would be enougth, i guess.

have you ever heard of the clise that sound something like this:'harry potter promote witchcraft'?this is just made up by some people who are so conservative and fanatic that they couldn't accept the stories...but why bother really?everybody in the whole wide world know full well that there are no such thing as wizard, flying broomstick, wand and etc etc...and by7 writing about it,ij.k rowling doesn't mean that thet are real, not that she can make it real...it was all imagination,to help people enhance their fantasies and creative thinking ...witchcraft and wizardry is only myth and legend, and based on that particular legend j.k rowling write those magnificent books...some,or rather most, of the good novels are also based of myth and legend...i've read all of harry potter books (around 10 times each) and nowhere from the book i can see j.k rowling sending any anti-Christian message...those people who said harry potter promote witchcraft never actually read the book;they just heard some biased rumours and then started banging this and that...and only 1 advice i can give here:read Harry Potter!.

If we, Christians, don't like it, we should say so with a spirit of love. That is where we get in so much trouble, it is the way too many say things. Think about how Jesus handled the woman accused of adultery. He hated what she had done, but he showed love, not hate toward her. Of course, He did tell her to go and sin no more, which many people would say was hateful and who was He to judge. Oh yes, He was and is God. Still, the point is, He did it with love and we can state our problems with Harry Potter in the same manner. It is about the witchcraft and we are to stay away from those things. If you want to read some great fiction from a Christian, try C.S Lewis. He has some things in there that are bothersome for some, but his point is much better made than Ms. Rowling.

The thing is Harry Potter is a FICTIONAL STORY!!! JK Rowling wrote a story, and just because she did, it doesn't mean that it's real or in any way does it promote witchcraft. It about finding yourself, and being all that you can be. If some Christians are just to blind sighted to this, then that's their problem, and they're missing out on a great book. It's sad to see that they're so close minded. But as long at they publically, or verbally, degrade Harry Potter all they're doing is making it more popular by doing it. And if they ban Harry Potter in schools, then kids will only want to read it more. So in a way they acually contribute to the magical world of Harry Potter. It's just sad that they can't enjoy the series themselves. Sucks for them!
p.s. great question.

There is a lot of ignorance about Harry Potter and what Christians think about it. Yes, there are a few, VERY outspoken people, who identify themselves with the Christian religion, who have led a lot of Christians to believe Harry Potter is evil.
HOWEVER: There are thousands of Christians who LOVE the books, who read them over and over, because the stories ring true to the Christian faith (sacrificial love, life after death, forgiveness, charity, acceptance of people of all "blood", etc.). I was recently at a Harry Potter conference in Toronto, and some of the more popular workshops, attended by hundreds of conventioneers, were the ones where the Christian symbolism in the books was discussed.
I would say that most of the Christians I know either love the books or are indifferent to them. It's just a few big mouths who hate them; and unfortunately, since they talk the loudest, people get the wrong impression about what Christians think.

first can i say im a strong christian who is obsessed with harry potter - like really obsessed, stood for 4 hours to get the last book, read it in one day, stood for 2 hours to see the first showing of the film. i cant even go into how big my obsession is without doing it justice.
the reason that SOME christians hate harry potter so much is because they havent read it. they automattically assume that because it involves magic it is the devils work and spreads evil. however the christian community who have read it realise it is just a story and can even go further and say that is spreads hope, love and caring in it. theres probably not one person in my church who haven atleast seen a film. my pastors even took the kids ministry to see the film.
there was a woman who once took JK Rowling to court who was a christian and wanted the books banned from schools because they were apparently spreading evil, she of course failed, and lost her court case - several times - recently she gave a statment saying that she had never even read or picked up a Harry Potter book.
so i agree with you that some christians dislike Harry but they are missing out due to there own narrow mindness as you and me both know, the majority of us love Harry. May he grow old with the wife and kids!

I've often wondered this issue too. They for the most part hate harry potter because their preachers tell them to. Mainly for the "witchcraft" issue which seems to them a defiance of god
despite the fact that religion itself is also fictitious. There are some that have gotten into "witchcraft" because of harry pottor but it's just like people who get into christianity because of the bible, it all has to do with the persons intelligence. Ignorance breeds these fictional items into some peoples true, die hard belief. In my opinion they should just shut the hell up and get off of it already. They pitched a fit about the davinci code but did we when they came out with that crappy mel gibson movie? Nope.

I am a Christian and I love Harry Potter. It is a great story. That is it a story nothing more. Some christians take it to be more than that. Remember these are also the christians who love Lord of the Rings too. It always seemed funny to me that they put down Harry for using magic but Lord of the rings is filled with just as much magic. Harry is a great story not fact. Maybe JK needed to put the discalimer in the rfront that any actual likeness to events or persons is strickly accidental. That might help.

Witchcraft has always been a sensitive issue. This is especially because it incurrs people to imagine the impossible and make them no longer be able to differentiate reality from fantasy. I once got extremely crazy about the HP series and started looking for books that are related to witchcraft. I found a little Wizards' Handbook found in the Children's Section and started doing whatever it said(e.g make a wand, create spells, say magic!magic!magic 3 times to the wand before u sleep and ur wand would become a real wand\i even started to say out spells in public and ppl thght i was crazy) That's how harmful HP series can be when ur not aware of the danger.
Moreover, do u realise how sad u feel whenever u finish a series, esp this last one? You keep wanting to read it again and again but it will never again satisfy ur desire to become a wizard.
I'm not a christian and I'm not against HP, i'm just relating my experience to you. I agree with you that it is full of love, courage and friendship and we can learn lots from it.
But as long as we do not get too involved and caught in that imaginary world, it's just fine.
