Lucky star:
A few tips: watch TV in English, and use your English all the time, in school, at home, at work, in the store, on the streets, at your work... all it takes is practice, practice, practice, and more practice [practice makes perfection].
Do not worry about the accent, you are in the process of improving your skills. If the person to whom you are talking does no understand, rephrase your idea and try again, but never quit.
Good luck and do not forget: practice, practice...and more practice.

I applaud your efforts take a class that would help. I have noticed that many people that visit this websight; and there sentances do not make any sence. "I am a non-American and I have a B.A. in English, but that I am not really mastering the language. Without the comma it becomes a run on do not use contractions or shortcuts. Creative writing course may help as well study regional authors, poetry, or go to the movies so you can learn slang, cliche',

It is common for many non-native speakers I have known to realize when they come to the States that their English is not as good as they thought it was.
The suggestion you got to read was a very good one, although I think reading on the Internet in English is helpful, too.
In general, get more exposure to English. Many of my ESL students only hear English when they come to their classes at the university. Outside of class they use the Internet in their native language or spend time with friends who share their native language. All languages are good, but if you want to learn English you need to make sure that you are hearing and reading a lot of English.
Make sure you attend your ESL classes regularly and get as much as possible out of them.
Actually, the English of your question is pretty good. Keep it up!
