He is also spending a large part of the day alone in his crate and not playing with the younger dogs or hanging with the humans, which is really unusual. The inside of his ears are very warm, so I think his is running a temperature. He's not eating and drinking very little and only when i bring him a small bowl into his crate. Please help 6.5 hours till our vet opens and I'm frantic

Of course he is CHOOSING to spend time in his crate, as an older dog, I NEVER lock his door, he is free to roam when I am home, I work from home so I can spend time with my dogs.

Emergency vet is open, but previous experience with them has been less than helpful in an emergency situation with my middle dog. I called my vets office this afternoon and they told me to wait till 7.30am today (Tuesday) to bring him in.

Is his stomach bloated? My GSD breathed heavily when he had bloat, but you could see and feel that his stomach was bloated. Is he retching or vomiting at all? Pancreatitis will cause pain and fever. He could also be breathing hard because he has a fever or he could be in pain. Are his gums a healthy pink,or are they pale or purplish? I really don't know what to tell you except to put cool, moist cloths on his head and groin area to bring his temperature down.Watch him closely, and if he gets worse, you may have to go to the emergency vet.If it's bloat or pancreatitis ( GSDs are prone to both,) it IS an emergency! Good luck, and I hope your dog is OK.Let us know what happens, would you.

take your gsd to the vet. Breathing rapidly is serious and panting heavily is normal i guess. My dog sometiems pants heavily after a long excersize in a hot weather. Spending a larage part of the day alone in his crate? You locked him? Or he should spent his day inside there. Im not sure, but does he have a flu or even a fever??

Keep trying to get your pup to drink water, it will make matters worse if he is dehydrated. You could also try taking some water on your hand and petting him with it, that may help cool him down, or put him in an air conditioned room. He probably has a fever which is why he is so warm.
There must be an emergency vet in your area, call them and see what their suggestions are.

pour pure alcohol over his body (not head) this will open the pores on your dogs body and pads and drop the temperature within minutes to where it should be. this is only to control the fver not to fix this will tide him over until you can get him to the vet. but if he is not cooled off then soon brain damage will occur. then you must check your dogs temp rectally the normal temperature is around 102 degrees

He must not be feeling well.
As far as the breathing, maybe he has something in his lungs. Fluids, perhaps?

The best thing to do right now is to just keep your dog as comfortable as possible.
