I started my job with the firm I work for 2years and 2months ago. A colleague started here 11 months ago. She started on pretty much the same starting salary that I did, but I found out yesterday that she makes more money than me. Only about £500 a year but it's still injustice as she doesn't work harder than me, and I was on more than her when she started here.

I can't confront my manager as we're not allowed to discuss pay, and I can't report her for doing that as she's my friend. Everyone says she's her managers favourite. But there's really no reason for that. It's true but I can't understand why her manager likes her so much, she doesnt work that hard, and her managers straight so she wouldnt fancy her.

What can I do?

As a manager first of all, the management there should not be picking favorites with their employees. And I believe the more dedicated most hard working employee deserves to be appreciated and should be paid more. Maybe you should just ask your boss if you might be able to get a raise anytime soon since you've been with the company such a long time.

It is difficult to know the reason. It may be a personality difference. Some people have certain intangible qualities that everyone likes. Employers often are prone to favoring such people. Maybe she has a more favorable job history. Life is like that. There are some people we will pass by, and others who will pass us. Best wishes.

Exactly the reason you shouldnt discuss pay packets - I started a job once on a higher rate of pay than some of the employees who had been there for ages and knew their jobs well because of my level of previous experience compared to theirs - if your not happy find another job and negotiate a higher rate of pay - if you want to stay where you are just forget about it!

Many times pay increase reflects an employee's growth potential within a company. Has this friend shown more interest in growing within the company than you?

Life's not fair. Ask your manager what you can do to improve your standing in the company. Find the opportunity to mention that if you do as good as ..... , can you expect appreciation from the company

Talk to him about just having a raise. You've been there over two years, I'm sure it's well deserved after that long.
