I would have used the word religion but then my question would have been an oxymoron.
Before you sling scorching verses at me, I am not an atheist, just a frequenter of Yahoo Answers and seems to me that the average demographic profile of R&S regulars is turning more and more atheist.
What do YOU think?

Yes it absolutely is. Although it is not a belief system I know what you mean. Go back 50 years and how many would have stood up and said "Yes in fact I am an atheist"?. Now the numbers of non religious people is growing rapidly. It is a wonderful thing.

Islam would claim the 'honour' and this is understandable when they are breeding fast and the offspring have no choice BUT to become muslim. The children are effectively forced into the system.
Other belief systems do something similar, of course, indoctrinating the children into the parents' choice but these children do not fear the threat of death if they decide not to partake.
Globally, atheism is definitely growing very fast but, as we atheists do not concentrate on brainwashing our kids into one lifestyle or another or with a sword poised over their necks if they ask too many questions, the rate of growth is a little slower.
You are right in that there are more and more atheists turning up on these pages. We are not afraid to speak out against the archaic god-concept and a lot of us are not from the bible-belt of the anomaly in the western world that is the US.
North-west Europe is the hub of the most-atheist countries and the third world is the centre of the most religious. Where does this place the US? As a third-world country.

Johnny Appleseed --

Atheists are under-represented (relative to Christians) in jails and prisons; and they are over-represented (relative to Christians) in science and higher education. Atheists have lower rates of: criminal behavior, divorce, teen pregnancy, STDs, and abortions than Christians.

The same holds true on the regional and national levels. The American “Bible-belt” has higher rates of socially pathological behavior than do the more secular regions, and America as a nation has higher rates than every less-religious developed nation in the world.

If Hell is expanding, it is only because more room is needed for all the Christians headed there.

Why don’t you provide some examples of people who had the benefit of growing up in the scientific era?

Nevertheless, Kant said that the existence of God could not be proven:

-- …”Even if God were to make an immediate appearance, I would still need rational theology as a presupposition. For how am I to be certain that it is God himself who has appeared to me, or only another powerful creature?”…
- Immanuel Kant, Lectures on Philosophical Theology.

Descartes played a primary role in replacing God's causal role in nature with mechanistic science, and in separating religious truth from reason and objective truth.

And Newton, the alchemist-scientist who not only spanned, but created and defines, the pre-science and modern-science boundary, not only doubted the existence of the Holy Trinity, but (even though not an Atheist himself) opened the door for a non-God based epistemology and may be considered the Father of Modern Scientific Atheism.

On here, definately - I think atheism is gaining a lot of ground under the more educated, tech-savvy people of the world since they have much better access to information via the net, and can educate themselves if they have the guts to do so.

Statistically in the world though, Islam is, though I speak under correction. Reconstructed Pagan belief systems such as Wicca are also growing at extreme rates.

Everyone's starting to wake up from their brainwashed coma they're been in for thousands of years. Technology today has proven hundreds of things that disprove the writings of the "bible" and evolution is all around us. It's growing harder and harder for people to keep a closed mind in this era and we're a few steps away from a mass epiphany. Life is short so spend time with loved ones, laugh much and live without holding back. There's no time to waste each week praying to an egotistical invisable being.

Sadly, and statistically, atheism isn't growing nearly as fast as I would like. But other than that, no, I don't believe that teaming masses of atheists are recruiting through yahoo answers.

I personally think that the fastest growing is not atheism but rather a redefined God to fit individual desires and needs. A more personal God that stays within peoples comfort zone and does not spill into others lives.

i think atheism is growing because the church isnt taken as seriously now-a-days, it was boud to happen. most people believed in christianity because their parents brought them up with it, but every so often there was one that would not believe, and so their children wouldnt believe, and you can see how it multiplied to the amound of people today that dont believe.
