I wish I knew, I worked retail once years ago, I got fired on my first week. They didn't pay me enough to put up with stupid people's crap! Same for people that work in restaurants and bars.

One reason is that most of people's "brain programming" for character is done in the very early years of their lives--like by about age three. And almost completely finished by age seven. If they are not taught in the early years of their lives to respect others, they seldom learn it later. It's pretty hard to learn proper manners and respect for others from a television or from a day care center. Parents can try to teach their children manners, but a child is awake and interacting with people for 12 hours a day. When parents only spend 1/6 of that time with the child, (s)he isn't going to learn manners and/or respect for others very well. So when the child grows up, he or she has little regard for other people--having not been properly taught to--and does not have very good manners--again, having not been properly taught manners.

Another reason is--and you see this a lot with older people--other people learn from people being rude to them for so long, that 'the squeaky wheel gets the grease.' They get frustrated because they can't get thru on a phone to right a mistake, or they don't get an answer when they write a letter, or they call the store and someone says they have a product on hand, but when they arrive, it's not there--nor is the employee who promised it. A myriad of things frustrate people and they tend to take it out on someone they don't have to live with.

People have circumstances in their lives that unfortunately sometimes affect others in a negative way. You never know if the person's mother just died, they just learned they had to have a root canal, or they just got fired, for example. Perhaps they are incorrectly directing their feelings about these circumstances towards you. Another possibility is that people are so used to getting bad customer service that they anticipate that they have to be rough with you in order to get what they need. I'm sorry you feel picked on and I hope things will work out for you.

People are rude because if they yell at you it seems to make them feel better about their worthless lives. Some people just don't care. And truly need a swift kick in the rear! Also the ones that act stuck up and walk around with Chanel knock offs don't have probably 2 dollars in their wallets. Don't let them bother you, your the one getting the discounts, not them. ha ha

There are miserable people in this world who are always in a bad mood and have a bad attitude. There are people who like making others feel as if they are less deserving than themselves, which we know is not true. There are people who just enjoy trying to make everyone around them miserable in order for them to feel good. Rise above the situation, be gracious and kind, be helpful and resourceful, be confidant in yourself and this will no longer bother you so much and your customers will come to like and trust you for your even-keeled attitude and mood.

People are rude and pushy because they have been raised to think they are never wrong. Our society says we are to constantly praise children for doing mediocre in life, because we don't want to upset their self esteem, so they grow up thinking the world owes them everything. Unfortunately when they don't get their way, this is what happens. Have you ever stopped and listened to the way children speak to their parents and elders these days. I heard one kid call his grandmother "fat ****"....come on now. No respect for elders or the law. Not all kids are this way, some actually have good parents who teach them right from wrong, but from what I see these days kids are in control of their parents.
and believe me it shows.

i worked for cricket communications in the retail store and 99% of the customers were just as you described them. but what you can do is kill them with kindness. smile in their faces and tell them to have a great day. dont show them that you are upset. I would get customers calling our corporate office to complain that I was too nice and considerate.
