He bore the sin burden of all humankind, Priest or otherwise.
I do agree on one thing, the "Priests" et al. are the ones who lead the people, so if the people are led in a lie, by Jesus they are supposed to be protected. Sometimes, it's not because of stupidity; it's because of blind ignorance.
You're right, it is political, and they do seem pretty greedy.
Just like government.
