I have a cockatiel, and I want a bigger bird like an African Grey, or a Cockatoo. No parakeets or anything. I just need suggestions, thanks :)

You need to go and read up on all the types of birds that interest you. If you can go and spend some time with the different breeds. Also remember that you already have a cockatiel and some birds wont get along with it. We have 4 birds and the only 2 that get along is the sun conure and the cockatiel. We would never trust the cockatoo and moustache parrot with the other 2 birds. Also when picking a bird think of what size beak you want to deal with..... how much noise you want. Believe me going from a cockatiel to a sun was interesting, then adding a cockatoo on top was even more interesting.... also how much space you have in your house to be able to fit the gigantic cage for the new arrival.... Personally I would go for a galah. They are bigger but they dont have a huge beak, easy to grab if they are being bratty. They dont talk as well as a grey but they are so lovely! I especially like the lutino galahs.

tiels are awesome birds!!! To be honest Greys are awesome smart buggers but require alot of hands on commitment, a large cage and lots of toys. They also can be kind of neurotic and are sometimes difficult to deal with, they also dont take to change well.

Toos ... loud, dusty, messy gives new meaning to the word neurotic. Will go thru a $50 toy in under 30 minutes. did I say loud?????? They are also love sponges and take an experienced bird owner to deal with their sometimes rather interesting and aggressive natures. Toos are dander birds ... my air filters need to be changed once a week in their room and they have killed 1 window air unit in less than a year. Too much dust!
We have rehomed 2 cockatoos one adult male M2 who is a feather shredder .. its a behavior thing. he also can be aggressive. The other is also an adult male U2 who is a lover and at 25 has never been more than an ornament. hes learning to be a BIRD and is having a blast doing it. We are their forever home.. and will probably add more toos. We seem to get along well with them.

Amazons are great birds about the size of a grey and can be much more outgoing, most are not shy birds. They are known to be clowns. I cant live without mine!

First think about do you have the time, money and energy for a larger bird. They are a lifetime commitment and nothing to be taken lightly. Most large birds go from home to home as it's tough work. The expense-which is ongoing- the noise- biting and all birds bite-the mess. Do some serious research on large parrots. Spend the day in a home with several large parrots and do the work required to care for them. Stick with your cockatiel as they are great birds and have so much to offer.

you must be loving your cockatiel to bits. they're the loveliest i had. my new one still bites alot though. my favourite parrot is the COCKATOO!!! the greater sulphur cockatoo is loud and big so i suggest you get the lesser sulphur cockatoo which is quieter. i haven't had one but i decided to start with a cockatiel first and progress to the cockatoo.

but if you would have lots of time to train a bird, the african grey would be talking and just as lovely.

I would recommend a male eclectus. These birds live for about 70 years and are great companions. My eclectus is learning about one word every day. he is only about a year and a half old. I also have African greys and cockatoos and they eclectus is the best companion. If you do get an eclectus don't get a female because as the reach sexual maturity around three they become very aggressive. There are also amazons which I have as well these birds are great but not as good as the eclectus. My eclectus has it's wings clipped so i can take him everywhere with me. he has never attacked me and is very well natured as are all male eclectus. Only clip one wing if you want them not to fly. this is because with both clipped they are stilled balanced in the air meaning they may still fly. One clipped wing will make them off balanced in the air so they will learn if they try to fly they just go in circles. So in the end an eclectus costs around $1200 but I got mine for $600 dollars. please email me if you would like any advice or have any more problems.

Here's a few suggestions for more medium sized parrots. Note that for these species, you really do need a lot of time on your hands and be able to see to their every day needs. Be sure to do tons of research on the species you are interested in.

African Grey - medium noise, great talker. Not really known to be a cuddly bird, but are highly intelligent. Need more calcium compared to other birds.

Amazon (blue fronted, yellow naped, etc) - medium-loud noise, great talkers. Although all birds can get hormonal at a certain age, amazons are known to be hit quite hard with it. So be prepared.

Galah - a type of cockatoo, can be great pets and easier to handle compared to other toos. I would only reccomend any other too if you are an expert on birds and know -exactly- what you are getting into. Check out mytoos.com

Eclectus - low-loud noise, great talkers. Males usually make better pets, females can often get horribly hormonal. They are quite diet sensitive and pellets are usually too much for them to handle. They are terrific birds, I reccomend this one. I don't have one myself, but plan to.

Lory (red, chattering, etc) - loud noise, can be good talkers (especially the chattering lory). Don't eat seeds or pellets, they require a special diet. They are super playful and exagerate every move - so cute and funny. I have a rainbow lorikeet and I love him to bits!

Small macaw (yellow collared, hanhs, etc) - loud noise, great talkers, quite playful.

Alexandrine - loud noise, great talkers, you don't need to be super experienced with birds to be able to handle one
