Hi there,
I recently had my Giant Yukon stolen so I am in the market for a new bike.
I am looking at a womens bike called "Specialized Mika" - its their new womens bike.
just wondering peoples thoughts on Giant vs Specialized?
I basically will use the bike for a bit of cross country on tracks, and riding about town. Looking to spend about $700 and under and want a reputable brand.

The Specialized is a good choice.

When looking for bikes, ignore the brand name and look at features and componentry... most good bikes are made in a handful of factories. There are some Specialized made in the largest bike factory on the planet (which happens to be Giant) while there are some Giants made in smaller factories (not owned by Giant).

If it were me, I'd look at KHS, Iron Horse, and K2. These are all good bikes and tend to have 1 level better components on them than a comparable Specialized, Trek, or Giant for the same price.

Both brands are very good.

I think it's important that you try the bike before you buy it, though. How the bike fits you is more important than if it has better or worse componentry. Also, if you can test ride them you can feel how the bikes fits you, rather than just looking at geometry charts and components lists.

Also, what brands do the bike shops near you handle? That can also make a difference. If none of the local bike shops handle brand A, then even buying the bike will turn more difficult than buying brand B.

While most bikes use 'standard' components (meaning that if you break the rear deraileur, or taco a wheel or something) that part can be used by several brands and likely easy to replace or upgrade, but some or most good bike shops offer free tune ups of the bike or good service, and establishing a good rep with them is a good thing.

The Mika looks nice, but also look at other options that you can see at bike shop.

agree w Roberto. I rode 6 different brands before i put my $$ down on the specialized epic.
I got it because it felt more stable, balanced, fast, and comfortable than the others. they were all good rides but you will tell the difference immediately, with a test ride.
Not suggesting an epic for you. Just a bike that fits and is your 1st choice after testing a couple.
(altho I want you to get the specialized heeheehee)

You won't go wrong with either. Go with the dealer you feel best about.
