Shoot for 8 hours; no more, no less. If you've had less than 7 for a day or two before you might want to up it to 9 just to catch up, though 8 is the recommended amount.
This goes for mental strength as well.
Just a few other tips:
- Drink plenty of water (1-2 litres a day, in other words at least 8 cups)
- Have a good breakfast with carbohydrates (such as bread or cereal) and eat well. Don't stuff yourself but make sure you're full.
- Keeping fit and doing LIGHT exercise the day before also helps both mental and physical strength.
Good luck, i know you only asked for how long to sleep ;)

Sleep will give you the rest you need.
8-10 hours every night
For strength you need to choose a balance diet that includes these food groups.
Milk group (milk and milk products)
milk, cheese, yogurt
Meat group (meat and meat substitutes)
meat: chicken, fish, beef, pork, lamb
legumes: beans and peas
nuts and seeds
Fruit and vegetable group
fruits
vegetables
Grain group (breads and cereals)
whole grain breads
enriched breads
rice
pasta
Also, after a well balance diet if you are wanting to build strength an exercise program would be good, such as a strength training program, lifting weights, or any kind of exercise within reason. Check with your physician before beginning any exercise program to rule out any problems. Also, they could advise you on any physical limitations should you have any. They could recommend a local gym or personal trainer for you.

Scientists have found and agreed that 8 hours is the ideal amount but as I've personally found, If I sleep during the summer as long as I want to it's usually around 11 hours before I'm completely energized.
Honestly No one with a life can do that.
So just try to get to bed around 9ish then take naps whenever possible. =p
Unless you have trouble sleeping. In which case please do not nap. You will get a good nights sleep if you just wait until then. Make sure to look foward to sleeping, also maybe to help your sleep more rewarding make sure not to have much caffine after 5-6 o'clock, please make sure to drink or eat something to help you sleep. Milk warmed up works. Tea and honey works really well to relax you a bit. But the greatest ever is turkey =p.
Yeah weird I know.

It depends on your age, but the average ammount is 7-8 hours. It also depends on the conditions you are sleeping in as to how much you will need to regain strength, or feel as though you have. My dad told me yesterday something about like a water tank or something where we you go in it, it is completely sealed off where no sound can get in or out. Your body is completely relaxed and like 2 or 3 hours of sleep in one of those things is the equivelent to like 9 or 10 hours in an average home.

uh sleep doesn't give you strength. Strength comes from a combination of things. But 8 hours will keep you well rested.

It varies from person to person and also depends on what kind of work they do.
When I was in my 20's, I could be on the ball with 4 hours of sleep.
In my 40's, when I was teaching, and now, with a job that requires a lot of physical labor... I do best with 6-7 hours of sleep.
Not gonna get it tonight, however.... **hurry up laundry!**

9 hours minimum, but really you should be sleeping 10 hours. People 100 years ago slept way more than people these days. Get your sleep, it's important. Which tells me, I should be going to bed now too. Have a good night.
