War isn't about winning a game and shaking hands. It's about crippling the enemy and controlling their ability to produce and survive. So, no. For sports to become a substitute for killing and occupation we'd have to honor agreements after each sports victory, which would not happen unfortunately.
The only way that scenario would work out is if some supreme power were in place to punish those that didn't honor the outcome of the sport.

Sports have been used to placate the proliteriate since Roman times. Sports keeps the sports fan from thinking about how the government is using them.

It has been for a VERY long time! Unfortunately it doesn't always resolve conflicts. The Olympics are a great example of 'sports warfare'.

No, the loser would end up getting pissed and bomb the winner and then you're back to war.
And that is just a stupid thing to say anyway. If some country kidnaps and kills some of our citizens, you suggest challenging them to a game of baseball?

actually sports were developed to prepare people for war. do you remeber? horse races, charriot races, knight tournaments, hunting /=shooting+patience+discipline/.
Which one would you choose for solving world's problems? Ice hockey? kendo? camel races? polar bear wrestling?
No it wont work, as someone above me said, the result would just p**s the loser who would bomb the winner in return.
