I remember the ink wells in my desk and I am 46. WE actually used them a few times when my teacher wanted us kids to see what school was like 25 years before. I found out it was really hard to keep a neat paper when using the old style ink pens. As to the dipping the hair in the ink well, never did that. The girl in front of me had a big brother and I wanted to live to see my 13th birthday.

Well, I'm not 8o yrs old---yet, have a ways to go ! I remember ink wells. I went to country school and we had the kind of desks that had the hole for the old fashioned ink wells, but we used ink bottles that fit into the holes. We had the kind of ink pens that you had to "pump" the ink up into a resevoir inside the pen by using a lever on the side of the pen. I think they were of the Scheaffer brand. We got a new one every school year. If you forgot to put the cap on over the point, it would leak permanent ink all over your paper, books, or the inside of your desk ! I had long braids and went home more than once with dark blue dyed ends from them being dipped in ink by the kid (usually a boy) who sat behind me! Aahhh, the good old days!!!

I was born in 1957 and I remember the desks with an ink well built in. We used nibbed pens for handwriting class & English. I always got in a terrible mess because no matter how much I dipped the nib it would either end up with writing that looked like a spider had crawled across the page or it had blobs of ink everywhere. I had been the milk monitor but never the ink monitor and when it was my turn I ended up with more ink on me than in the inkwells! I do remember when we changed to biro pens and on occasion I forgot and dipped it into the empty inkwell. :)

I remember the hole in my desk where the ink used to be. But by the time I got to school, those kinda pens were outdated. I loved those desks, though. One attached behind the other in long rows, with desk tops that flipped up so you could put your books in there. Now the poor kids have to wear backpacks loaded with books. I bet that generation will have worse back problems than we did. All because if ink wells LOL

Yes, I do remember ink wells, and I am only 61. We started using them in 3rd grade. I remember spilling ink on my desk and on my clothing while trying to fill my pen from the ink well (jar of ink). I was so akward with the use of an ink pen. My favorite color was blue. A choice between blue or black. But, soon there were ball-point pens, and boy was I delighted to get one! You can't imagine how intrigued I was about the ball-point pens! Wow!
But thanks for the reminder of this ancient product, and for the nostalgia.

My junior high school had the ink wells in the very old desks, but we never used that kind of ink. I bet we would have been sent home if we bought a glass jar of ink to school.

yes i remember the ink wells and the dip in pens we had to use.filling them up could waste a fair bit of time .i also remember the smack around the ears when the stuff got spilled across the desk.trying to do neat work was almost impossible with all the blobs and the smudges that always seemed to happen even with the best efforts.mind you the pens were good for proding your classmates or for throwing, but you always got smacked round the head if you got caught.

You have to remember I was one of the smallest boys in school so when I dipped the girls pigtails in the ink, well I got the crap beat out of me. To say I got whipped in school is a understatement, never by a teacher but by fellow students.

I don't remember ink wells, but have heard my Mother-in-law speak of them. I remember the ink pens, not ball point pens. We had to put ink filled tubes in the pens. Gosh, those were a mess, if you weren't careful you could end up with big blobs of ink. You weren't one of whose guys that did such a thing to girls were you.lol
