I'm real suprised by the answers, especially by Christians! Guys, show a little more love, geeza...
Merrywhiterose, good question. I can't speak for everyone, but from my personal testimony, I still believe in God because He is there, and He is looking after my life. He created me, and Has a plan for me. If I was to say "well God, you've been great thus far, I think I might go my own little way now", I would lose His perfect plan for me. He knows my future, I don't know my future.
Me believing in God doesn't make Him true, but God is true, therefore I believe in Him. Just because people don't believe in God or have fallen away from God does it nullify the existence of God. Whether you rely on Him or not, God will always be there. God is love, God is faithful, and He is all these to everyone, both believers and unbelievers, whether you believe that or not.
God loves you and has invited you to have a relationship with Him by His grace which is Jesus Christ. If you have an open mind and seek Him, I'm sure He'll touch your heart as He has done with mine.

Are you referring the God of the Bible? Jehovah? Elohim? El Shaddai? To Whom a thousand years is as a day?
You think "civilization" has matured? You must be really young. Read some world history and then read the news accounts of what's going on in this civilized world today or scan CNN, MSNBC, CNBC or watch Law and Order or CSI.
Civilized? You'd better have some belief in a "it's gotta get better somewhere" place. Anything you feel is going to be good is worth waiting for. But you know what? If you live like it's going to happen, a good, moral life and it doesn't happen, what did you lose? And what happened to you to make you so certain that it's not going to happen?

No human will give us perfect eternal lives in paradise. And no human can always keep a promise. No human has given us life everyday or made the sun, moon, etc. exist. No goverment other than God's will bring happiness to mankind.
Our wait will be worth it when we get perfecteternal lives for waiting and staying loyal and faithful to Jehovah God.
Jehovah always keeps his promise and we must have faith in him.=]
If we are thinking that we don't need God, we must be careful becasue that is showing independence. That thought was what Adam and Eve had. They thought they didn't need God and they can make their own decisions. What happened to them? Well, obviously not something good. We must trust God and he will help us..this system of things will soon be gone. Zephaniah 1:14

It has nothing to do with a maturity level, nothing at all. Ask yourself this. What has science proven to you? Please, do not say evolution. Evolution HAS NOT BEEN PROVEN. If it had been proven, it would have been front page news. Honestly, look up all the information on evolution. Every bit of it has been disputed by even secular science. Darwin himself stated that there should be billions upon billions of bones to prove evolution, but there is not. Why is that? Do you think people have not looked hard enough for them? God's book, the Bible, on the other hand has not changed. This can be proven by the dead sea scrolls (for the old testament) The remaining portions of the scrolls is almost word for word translation. The prophecies in the Bible on the other hand have all come true. This has been proven. Example, Israel becoming a nation again. Israel wasn't a nation for a thousand of years, yet in (I believe 1964) it became a nation yet again. Interesting.
So now, you can have evolution, which hasn't been proven, or you can take Gods word for things. I choose God.
God Bless

As long as people die, they will probably continue to believe in god. If we ever manage to extend human life indefinitely, most religions will probably die off.
As for waiting 2000 years for Jesus to come back...
In Matthew 24, Jesus said that he would return before the current generation passed away. Since that was around 2000 years ago, we can be pretty certain that the generation of that time is long gone. So, according to what Jesus said, if he was actually going to come back, then he already has - a long, long time ago.
I would guess that if Jesus did bother to come back, he probably saw that humanity had completely screwed up Christianity within several days of Jesus's original departure. He probably got disgusted and just left again without bothering to say anything to anyone.
In fact, Jesus probably was so fed up with humanity that he just decided to subcontract out the management of Earth to some other god. I would guess maybe Eris, the Greek goddess of chaos and discord, must have gotten the job.

Why not believe in God? I have heard from people i trust 100% so many unexplainable things that prove that yes there is a God. Not to mention i have experienced quite a few things that have left me proof that He exists. I am not even religious because i do not agree with quite a number of things the church claims.....but i have faith and that is all i need. Maybe you should look around and see what happens....do you think it's pure luck when people out of a sudden get cured out of nowhere from deadly diseases?. I know plenty of cases in which people have been on the verge of death with cancer...but then all of a sudden they get up like just like that and then when diagnosed they no longer have cancer. Cases like these should explain that God does exist. Now, you probably would have to witness things yourself in order to believe since you have such a "mature" mind.

Religion is a very personal issue, and people believe in different things for different reasons.
Most of the world believes in some sort of deity in either organized religion or basic spirituality.
I'm assuming you are attacking Christianity since it has been about 2000 years since the birth of Jesus. But Christianity is only a portion of the entire world religious scene. And even Christianity has multiple branches.
Religion in itself has been around since people have to believe in it. Mythology, folklore, ancient gods and goddesses, they all play a part in the culture of the time and the culture that is to be. And religion will be around for a long time to come. There will always be people to believe in something, or nothing at all, and that is their spiritual choice.
As for me, I'm a Christian, and I see God's work everyday in my baby boy. How could I not believe?
Hope this helps! :-)

Mature civilization?
Approximately 500 million people died in the last century from the effects of war, and the resulting famine, disease, and anarchy that followed.
If that is a mature civilization, PULEEZE give me a less mature one!
If people had obeyed only one Christian commandment, many more people would have lived their lives out in relative peace and safety:
Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.

Sweet Pea it is a long wait because it will be worth it in the end. Faith is the substance of things hope for. Don't give up on believing there is a God, he is real. I will put it this way did civilization make the perfect earth we are on with the perfect climate just for us. No, civilization is destroying it. Good luck my dear!
