I have been in talks with a lady in my neighborhood discussing babysitting. She has her neice and nephew staying with her for a year, as the mother is not in a stable place right now. The neighbor is a single woman and was saying she is looking for affordable babysitting. I offered to look after the kids when she needed me and she said that was great and that we could discuss the pay. Today she came by by surprise and asked if I could watch the kids for 2 hours. I did. Then she said she had a meeting and could I watch them tonight for an hour. Well one hour turned into 2 and I was expecting some $ when she came for them...but she just thanked me and left. I could have asked for the money I suppose but then we never set a price. I am just a bit bewildered that she didn't even OFFER me anything. I'm 33 and have 2 kids of my own. I fed her kids and kept them happy for 4 hours today. What do I say when she asks me to sit again?.

Since you didn't discuss the amount of money you'd want first she may have assumed you were doing her a favor. I could see you doing it once for free, but twice may have already made her think you were going to do it for free on a regular basis. I would suggest asking her what she thinks would be a fair amount the next time she asks you to watch them. That is if you even want to do it again.

Was this all in the same week? Maybe she is planning on paying you by the week. If not next time she drops the kids off say okay but it will 2.50 an hour, or 50.00 a week, make sure she knows you are charging.

Next time just turn her down. She is a single mother, so cut her some slack. Even though you know its rude to not even offer some money, just think about the fact you helped her.

Before she asks you again tell her that you think there has been a miscommunication. Tell her that you thought she would be paying for a sitter, and while you will forget about what she owes you(since she didn't understand that you thought you would be paid), you cannot do it again.

Tell her no. You don't need to offer her an explanation. If she badgers you for one, tell her it only takes one time for someone to burn you and you don't give people like that a 2nd chance to do it again.
