We recently found out that my dad has cancer, but my mom doesnt think he's telling the truth. He said he is being treated with a pill. Is there really a pill to treat cancer? If there is, what is it called?

The tumors are in his gums.

My parents are divorced. She did ask if she could go to the next appointment and he said no.

There are different kinds of cancer treatment available in a pill form. It is not just one kind. The pill will differ depending on what kind or nature of cancer a person got.

Since you mentioned the tumor is in his gum I believe you are trying to figure out that he got cancer of the gums. Now if that is the case, the current treatment used for gum cancer is either surgery to remove the tumors or by radiotherapy or combination of both. The use of any drug with this kind of cancer is still on research trials. Probably, the pills he is taking are not exactly for cancer but are prescribed as supplementation or some sort of supportive treatment most probably to alleviate the symptoms, combat side effects or to boost his health.

But we cannot be certain on that unless the exact location of cancer is known. We cannot be sure if he really got cancer of the gums or anywhere else.

Anyway, it would just be appropriate to know the details of his condition. If he really got cancer, support of significant others is much needed by your father. It plays a great role in treating cancer so it will be pretty smart to find out what is going on with your father.

It depends on the type of tumor, but yes many tumors can be treated with a variety of pills - especially if they are receptive to certain hormones. This is especially true with breast cancer, but there can also be other tumors that will respond to certain meds.

If your mom has doubts, maybe she can arrange to accompany him on his next doctor visit, so she can get her questions answered, too. Cancer affects the entire family & it's important that everyone understands what is happening. It is no longer an automatic death sentence, but can be a chronic, long-term, managed disease allowing the patient to continue on enjoying life.
