Laguna Beach is much more beautiful and charming than Newport Beach! You can always visit both, though, because they're not very far away from each other. Just go down the coast from Newport to Laguna to Dana Point to San Clemente. They are all beautiful beach cities!

They are completely different beaches. So it is just a matter of taste. Newport is built on a sand bar river mouth. the beaches are flat with no rocks or terrain.
Laguna is a hilly area that extends right down to the water. There are some great sand beaches and lots of areas of cliffs and rocks. The water is usually clearer in the Laguna area because there is not as much sand stirred up as there is in Newport.

Newport is larger and has more people and probably has more restaurants and bars than Laguna. But... Laguna has enough quality eating establishments to go around and is much more picturesque tha Newport. If you are going to be staying for a few days I would stay in Laguna and you can always go to Newport and Dana Point for day trips. Everything is real close.

Have fun.

Even though I live in Los Angeles, I'd have to say Newport Beach. Laguna Beach is glamorized by that stupid MTV show....
it's the equivalent of asking Beverly Hills or Bel-Air.

Newport is my favorite because laguna has sharks and cliffs, where newport has easy waves and shells!

There are just a short drive from each other. Check them both out and you decide. I like them both, but for swimming I like Newport.
