How old is your camera? If it's a few years old, the rubber might be starting to degrade. Send it in for a thorough cleaning, etc, and the rubber should be fine for a while after.
If it's not so old, maybe it's just heat and humidity getting to it. Keep it in a cooler, drier place.

There is a product put out by GC (I think) called " Rubber Renuzit" for one, that you should be able to get from most any electronics parts house. It is used on tape belts and rubber bushings etc. Cleaning with a mild soap and COLD water is also a good idea.

Some nikon film cameras, F90/N90 notably, are especially susceptable to this. There's not a lot that can be done about it other than a cleaning every now and again.
