The Bible is an ancient book from an ancient culture. In that culture the cliche of someone being called a "sheep" for not thinking for himself most likely didn't exist. A lot of people lived as shepherds. They were just drawing analogies with the things that they had to work with. Don't read too terrible much into it.

Most people are either a sheep or a Shepard. Perhaps in choosing to adhere to your own independent thought you are indeed a Shepard.
Perhaps with this question you have just taken your first step in life as a Shepard.

Does your boss not lead you at work? It happens all throughout life.....some lead and others follow. Those who follow do so by their own choice.....they have thought about it and like the one who is leading. Mindless? No. Those who follow have independantly made the choice to follow the leader who makes them feel good, gives them comfort, and gives them guidelines for their lives. And the sheep thing is symbolic.

Did you think this question up all by yourself? How many other people here have asked the same question? Seems to me that you are just as incapable of independent thought as those you accuse.

Answered by Isaiah 53:6.
6 All of us like sheep have gone astray, Each of us has turned to his own way; But the LORD has caused the iniquity of us all To fall on Him.
We follow Him because He leads us to eternallife.

I prefer to think of myself as a hog - and there are so few references to swineherds in the Bible - I'm getting in touch with my inner pig.

It is indeed symbolic.
Sheep are stupid. They don't have a clue about what's going on, they could wander off a cliff. They would all die if it wasn't for the shepherd, as the shepherd knows how to care for the sheep.
People are stupid. We don't know how to handle the world we've been blessed with. We would have an eternity in Hell if it wasn't for Jesus, because he knows how to care for us stupid people.
There you have it.
Hope I Helped
God Bless

Well the reason why God often refer to us as sheep is because sheep are really, REALLY stupid creatures! They need constant care, they don't know HOW to really think for them selves and are so easily distracted.

the ones(claiming independance) I "see" on YA R&S repeat all the PC ideas. They also get angry at anyone daring to think something they disagree with (free and independent thought?).

The only alternative to being a sheep is being a goat.
31"When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his throne in heavenly glory. 32All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.
34"Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.'
37"Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?'
40"The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.'
41"Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.'
44"They also will answer, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?'
45"He will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.'
46"Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life."
