It's sort of like when you are waiting in line for a ride at the amusement park for a long time, and some kids jump over the barricade and jump onto the rides without waiting their turn. More and more of them keep doing it, so that none of the kids who are waiting their turn in line get to ride. It's not fair and that is how illegal immigration works.
Illegal immigrants "jump in front" of legal immigrants who wait their turn and follow the law. Like the greedy children who jump in front of others, they continue to take things that don't belong to them (services, benefits, hospitalization, schooling) and steal from others (identity theft). They don't think the laws (rules) apply to them. When someone confronts them about it...just like the bullies at the amusement park, they get angry and lie.
****edit****
That's how I would explain it to a child although I don't know why we are bothering to answer her question. She's a big Pro-illegal and will pick an answer that stokes her own political viewpoint.
****edit****
Because I've read your previous questions and answers. You are definitely promoting the illegal alien agenda. Have fun playing your silly games.

Great question! I had to stop and think about this one for a bit.
So let's see. I certainly wouldn't preach any of that hate filled "illegals are criminals" bull or that they are only here to leech off of Americans. I don't think that's the message I'd want to send to my child.
Although I guess my level of reasoning would depend on how old my child was and how far along his moral reasoning is. But I guess I'd explain the reasons that people even bother immigrating illegally in the first place. Namely, no jobs, no food, no money, as well as the impossibilities of the legal immigration system. I'd explain that these families often have no other option but to come to America even though they aren't supposed to and that if my child was starving I'd do everything in my power to feed him.
Anyways. Just a thought.

First I gave them some background.
I told them that the entire world is devided into countries with borders and each country tries to keep their country safe for the people who belong there.
Illegals are people who live in bad countries and want to go to good countries and ruin them so that everyone is as miserable as they are.
Actually I didn't do that, I just thought it would be a funny answer.
What I really did was let the older ones watch the You-Tube videos of the pro-immigration rallies, the disrespect for our flag, and showed them some of the articles about flying the Mexican Flag and inverting the American flag.
Then I let them see some of the posts on here by the illegals, And let them look at some of the pro-Aztlan, La Raza, and MEChA sites.
After all that I asked them what their opinions were of illegals.
My boys said we should go to war and kill them or drive them out.
My daughter is older and more compassionate, she said the Government needs to enforce our laws and make them all leave. Then we should carefully allow in the ones who are actually good and deserve an opprotunity to be here. But she thinks they should all go home first since it would be too hard too sort them out while they are here.
I did not involve my youngest because he is 8 and I don't feel that he could make an informed belief, I believe in giving them the ability to find information and form their own belief system about anything. That is why I did not let them read anything from the racists or the talk-radio people, I let them make their decisions based on what illegals and their supporters themselves say.
I did have to explain the whole White Pendejo Boy thing though, thanks all, that really impressed them with your sterling qualities.
EDIT: Oh yeah, I also told them that illegals are blood-thirsty heathens that eat children because all of us Anti's just spout ignorant things with no concept of reality.
We are all idiots, I mean come on.
What sort of an idiot would claim that someone was a criminal just because they broke the law?
Really, how ignorant.

Kids don't need to know about this.
If you are looking for an opinion, this is coming from a very proud California Native...
My family has been in California for eight generations now. Only the last two generations have been penetrated by some Mexican blood. Besides that my ancestors were some of the first whitemen to come to the New World and also some Native American Indians. My forefathers and foremothers fought in the American Revolution and the Civil War, North and South.
This great nation was built by immigrants, FACT!
As a U.S. citizen I am not entitled to hire anyone I want nor marry and live in my own country with anyone I want, FACT!
I am from Orange County, FACT.
The Mexicans were here first, FACT!
I have nothing against Mexicans.
If it weren't for the Mexicans, who would mow my neighbors lawn? Who would clean the OC housewive's homes?
What would our regular diets be if we didn't have Mexican food?
What would the public elementary school teachers do with all of their extra time left over, actually teach the whities?
Where would we be without Dora the Explorer? Or my favorite, Maria & Luis from Sesame St. which means I never would have learned how to count to ten in Spanish nor say hola! Oh my gosh! We wouldn't have Teresa the brown Barbie, my whitey daughter's favorite. And now that I think about it, Disney probably never would have created all of the dark haired Princesses after Snow White. Just imagine! Who would the nasty boys or catty mean girls have been in school? No Low-rider chicks threatening to cut my hair off just because I was the new girl and the Mexican boys were attracted to me. Who would have stolen my bike when I was a kid? All of that rich cultural experience never would have happened.
In rich American tradition, I married an illegal immigrant. A true Neanderthal from the Old Country. He started doing the work that the whities prefer to have whities and not others doing for them. He is a U.S. citizen now. He is in the position to hire the Mexicans as they are getting more skilled but he sticks to the white boys from Europe as their work ethic is superior and the clients know it. But I am very proud of my Mexican neighbors since they are now becoming business competition, clearly doing well, driving around in their Cadillac Escalades, buying homes in former whites only neighborhoods.
I do have one great piece of advice, Mexican families, please teach your children your mother tongue. We are living in a white minority and the Mexican language is very important. Too many Mexican Americans do not speak Mexican, there is no good logic behind that. Be proud to teach all the good things about your culture.

It depends on the child's age first of all and what level they are at.
I would tell them that people want to come to the United States but some do not go through the process. Some just sneak over. They do so because they feel that they don't have a choice.
Think of it like this: Someone breaking into a house because they need shelter. They do not want to cause harm.

The government -- that's like mommy and daddy for adults -- gives people stuff, just like mommy gives you stuffed animals sometimes. People in other countries don't get as much stuff, so they want to move here where they will get a lot of stuff. But there is only so much stuff to go around. Some people are worried that if too many more people come here, then everyone will get less stuff. So the government limits how many people can come here. But it's hard to keep them out. Some people sneak in without getting the government's permission. That's called illegal immigration.

Hmm, since your explaining to a child, try to use a funny or creative way. like tell him like illegal immigration is like a fly. Heres an easy way:
A fly (illegal immigrants) comes into your path one day and sees your beautiful body filled with tasty blood (america escpecially california). A fly has to suck your blood to live (has to work for a living), but in doing so it hurts you after its done sucking your blood (causes downfall in economy, taxes, education, over population, etc.). After the fly sucks your blood, you realize u have an itchy red bump on u (punishment for illegal immigration) and it wont go away for a while (its gonna take a long time for us to recover).
Well, hope that helps, have a nice day =)

I would tell my child that illegal immigration is when a person comes from another country into our country and they're not allowed to be here.
It really depends on the comprehension level of the child though.

I would start by saying. We are all human beings. All of us were born in different countries. There are laws and policies that determine which country we becomes a citizen of.
Some people may live in countries other than which they were born or have citizenship of. Laws and policies determine this. When we refer to an illegal person, this refers to someone who is in a country that is violating the policies of the current law of that country as to their citizenship and rights.

Legal immigration - "someone asking your permission to enter before he/she is allowed by you to enter your room / house / yard / etc." An entry with permission.
Illegal immigration - "someone entering your room / house / yard / etc without your permission to enter." An entry without permission.
So the key here is 'permission'.
