I am looking for ideas for my one year old's birthday and since I know a hundred Answers users probably already asked, I searched the questions and answers and everyone says that babies don't remember. WRONG! MOST don't ... some do. I remember my 1st birthday.
So, you really don't remember, huh?
What IS your 1st memory?

As I said, my dear people, I REMEMBER. Yes, I remember things that happened before and after that day. I remember THINKING what I would do, asking for what I want, etc. Not to sound arrogant, but I believe I use more than 10% of my brain. Thanks for your wonderful answers!!!
Again, yes doubters, I really do remember. ;-D

I dont remember my first birthday aside from pictures I have seen. Most babies will not remember them but I still throw them anyways. I have such a terrible memory but I think my first memory I was 4 or 5 and living in Pittsburgh, I remember my sister running around the backyard naked and finding caterpillars (seriously, Im not joking). I also remember that was when my aunt introduced us to putting tomatoes in our mac n cheese and my sister pushing me down the stairs. Other than that I dont really remember anything before then.
My oldest is 6 1/2 and she remembers things from when she was 2. She remembers where we lived and she remembers going to Disney at age 3. Im not sure if she remembers anything prior to that. Ill have to ask her tomorrow.

According to repeated studies, it is not possible to remember prior to 1 year old. It has to do with brain development. Most people who think they remember that early actually have some sort of photo evidence that they now don't remember having ever seen. But, yes, I do believe some people (and not many) do remember a 1st birthday party. That is right on the cusp of the ability.
I have a memory that occurred between 1 and 1.5 years old of a visit to Old North Church in the company of a person who passed away when I was 1.5 years old. My Mom said we visited it a couple of months after we arrived in Massachusetts (we left just before I turned 2). Lots of clues proved that it was a memory and not just photos or something, particularly since it was believed that there were no photos of the person who died and I found one in my great-aunt's possessions. My parents verified who it was and that this person was with us in MA during the visit.
In my family, virtually nobody else has any memory prior to the age of 3, but sometimes it's hard to pinpoint when the memory occurred. Unless you have some major event and can be certain that you didn't see a replay, it's hard to be really sure. While I don't have a photographic memory, I appear to have a knack of remembering if I had seen something before. I just have to work out the clues.

Most children don't remember things that early unless there is a tramatic event, even then the child's brain has ways to cope to block those memories from sticking.
Are you sure you actually remember your first birthday? Or are you creating false memories from information that you gathered by looking at pictures and hearing stories. That is more likely.
My first memory was my parents fighting and me pulling my little brother out of the room in his carseat, taking him into the living room and turning on the tv. I was almost 2 1/2.

Hmm, do you really remember, or have you formed a memory based on what you have been told? What happened the day before and the day after your birthday, if your memory is that good?
Sorry, but just because you 'remember' it doesn't mean that you have to make it super special.
You know your baby best and so you should do things with a theme that he is into, but remember that it really is a day for adults to celebrate the birth, not the baby!

There's new evidence that people may actually develop their memories prior to 2 or three, which is what people used to think. My husband says he does. I sure don't.
Honestly, though, even if they can remember, most babies won't really care about their first birthday because they don't know what's going on. If you have pictures and show your baby that you did something special on that day, I think that's all that matters. We don't throw a big party but I always like to make a special cake myself for my kids. That way when they're older and see the pictures I can tell them I did it to make them feel special on their day.

I really dont remember my first birthday... My earliest memory was when I was two...I was out of the porch with my aunt blowing bubbles...as for an idea for the birthday....get her/him clothes. At the age when babies start getting into stuff like food and dirt outside and well anything really a change of cloths is a must.

My first memory is from a head injury at 2 years old and I remember it very vividly. I did however suffer pretty much the same injury when I was 18 months and don't remember any of it.

My dad put me in the play area so he could get some work done and I threw a fit, So he turned around because he felt bad with a smile and picked me up to comfort me.
