A handwritten thank you note will mean so much to the relatives and friends. Good for you for sending them.

The note does not have to be fancy, or long, only 3 or 4 sentences. I was taught not to say "money", but use the word "gift" instead. It's nice to tell how you plan to use it..

After having received a gift of money, just write, "Thank you for your very generous and thoughtful gift. I am saving for a ____________, (or I am putting it towards_________), or I have been wanting to buy a __________), etc.

You can then go on to say something about the occasion for which you received the gift: "I was very happy that you were able to come to my graduation (birthday), etc." ; just a few lines about them attending an occasion or sending something as a rememberance of the occasion.

I am sure whoever sent the gift will be very appeciative of your note if it comes from the heart!

Thank them for their "gift," and mention something that you are saving toward or something you were able to purchase recently. Do not mention the money or the amount, kind of skirt the issue by letting them know that it helped you to achieve a goal or has gone into savings for a large purchase you'd like to make.

I think it would be nice to say thank you and add that what you are going to use the money for. I always like to know what my niece used the money for, maybe a book or clothes or music. It makes me happy to know that even though I couldn't get that "perfect"gift for them, in a way I still did by giving them the money.

If you wanted to be friendly, you could say how much you appreciate it and 'oh, I was saving for this or that' or 'I'll probably use it to buy ____.' Just make them feel appreciated with a nice note to let them know you acknowledged their gift.

"Thank you for the generous gift, it will be very helpful when I purchase ____ or go to _____ "(or whatever applies). Don't says "thanks for the fifty bucks."
