I have a 1080p big screen, and I have an xbox 360. Most video games say only 720 and 1080i. So lets I'm playing Madden, (which isnt compadable with 1080p) is it still at least hi-def? What exactly is it showing to me? thx.

The first answer is in error.
(In the USA)
- EDTV is 480p
-Both 720p and 1080i are hi-def

So if you are feeding the 1080p TV a 720p or 1080i signal, you are seeing hi-def. Of course, unless the TV uses a CRT, it always displays 1080p, the electronics in the TV upconvert the signal to match its native resolution, just like it upconverts 480i to 1080p.

A 1080P TV set does ALL LEVELS of resolution.....

So your 720P Games are actually taken apart signal-wise and reconstructed to fit the 1080P display.....
But it's still 720 P resolution....and it always will be. Just like
" I Love Lucy" will always be 480i and in Black and White, yet it's displayed on the screen.....

Only your 1080i TV signals will be 1080, and your 1080P games will be in 1080....just transmitted to the display differently, YET BOTH are 1080....

All games for xbox 360 are 720progressive. Blue ray (PS3) is the only 1080p format disc. So unless you are playing PS3, you are seeing 720p. Yes that is high def. It was the only high def in the beginning.

a 1080p set will usually upconvert any input to 1080p
that doesn't mean it will look as good as a 1080p signal.

1080i is defined as HD
720p is defined as ED

if u feed it ED u see a faked (upconverted) HD picture.
