1) and 2) Well, I guess some people have been given that story, and it's portrayed in art as such.
3) A lot of the most vocal religious people seem not to. I remember one pastor in Orlando got into quite a bit of hot water with his denomination because he wanted to address global warming issues and -- oh, yes, poverty, I believe.
4) Because the most vocal ones are pounding "intelligent design" and creationism and saying evolution is just a theory. Well, it is, but one with more evidence to back it up than creationism, no matter how it's packaged. I would greatly appreciate more Christians saying they believe in science and maybe the creation story is just allegory.
5) Because many religious people seem to be anti-evolution and anti-science.
I guess both sides make the same mistakes with the last three parts.

1) There are Biblical accounts of angels coming down from clouds and Jesus ascends to Heaven surrounded by clouds.
2) In religious art going back 2000 years everyone is always looking up for a "sign" from Heaven. Where does it say that Heaven will come down?
3) I know some Christians who don't care about the environment, but I think most do.
4) A minority of very loud and contentious Christians claim the creation stories are literally true. So they helped form this stereotype.
5) Religion is a way of living. Evolution is a theory proven over and over for the last 100 years. Its discoveries are now linked to genetics, which has applications in medical science. It's more than just a theory.

1. I know what the bible means when it refers to heaven. I don't get my information from cartoons
2. I used to be a believer. I am aware that the bible states plainly that the New Jerusalem will come down and that there will be no need for the sun because god will be the light and he will dwell with man on earth and the earth will be renewed. Doesn't matter...I don't believe in god or that the bible is the inspired word of a god being.
3. This is because the religious right had a great part in voting for a president that did not give a hoot about global warming and stated that the jury is still out on the facts about global warming.
4.We think that this is not true because there are so many things about science that the religious refuse to believe or accept. And because of forums like this where xtians constantly speak against science. Of course I know that there are religious people who do not feel this way...apparently they don't vote.
5. Because so many religious people think that ''god'' created the world less than 10,000 yrs ago. They refuse to accept the archaeological findings that prove otherwise. By the way evolution is a theory based on some d a m n good evidence.

I'm with you on everything except 5. Religion is a way of living but evolution is not a theory in the non scientific sense. It's a fact which most religious people in this country embrace.

I would withhold judgment. I know that people can change their minds. It happened to me (I was a pretty hardcore polytheist and am now an atheist), and it can happen to others for any number of reasons. People have different experiences and come to different conclusions. There is no reason a person can't change their mind about things or have an experience somewhere along the way that requires them to do so. Such is life.

3. Here in America, the religious nuts have allied themselves with the Republican Party, sold their souls as it were for political power. The Republicans are deeply concerned with making the rich richer, and promoting corporations at the expense of human beings. The environment gets in the way of the bottom line.
4. Many prominent "christians" in America, and on these boards, feel compelled to reject scientific knowledge and lie about it. If the majority of Christians embrace science, then they've got a funny way of showing it.
5. As I said in #4, many prominent "christians" feel compelled to lie about science. Their favorite science to lie about is evolution. THEY'RE the ones starting the argument.

why are you making Atheist seem like their wrong a fairy tale is still a fairy tale... did you realize that the bible is prophecy and not history? delivered to humanity to control and cause confusion by some humans who worshipped themselves as god. now Armageddon is in fact Nature vs Religion , nature evolves and religion keeps trying to catch up with it... but the truth is bursting out faster than the Christians can keep up with it... the new versions of the bible are always trying to incorporate changes in evolution that they didn't forsee...

I don't think most people believe these things at all.
I have noticed that atheists know more about the bible and other faiths then most Christians. (this goes more for the "regulars." not the bored kid on summer break.)
