I think you mean a scrap engine. It depends on why the engine is considered scrap. If the casting is cracked open then it is a big chunk of cast steel that can be sold by the pound for the steel junk price of a few cents per. If it only has piston problems then it is a candidate for rebuilding by putting a $1000 or so of parts and labor into it.

I am guessing that those were not the car engines I am thinking of that new are worth a few thousand. They could be racing car engines or stationary power plant engines that are worth the effort to salvage them if the starting part is already worth $3000.

A scrap jet engine might be worth $3000. Steel is actually up to 7 cents a pound for whole cars. If the engine weighed 600 pounds, then obviously that's $42.

#1 steel is 2 cents a pound
an aluminum engin block is worth more , but to get top dollar, you must take all the aluminum apart from the steel, a time intensive job that does not translate to better money.
engines weigh from about 150 to 200 # up.
