Im in the military. I should have been promoted on 13 July 2007 but wasn't because i got in to a little trouble. My commander said that i need to be able to tell him why I "deserve" the next rank. He and I are having a meeting next month and that is 1 of the questions going to be ask. I dont do that kinda stuff well so any input would be appreciated. How would you respond if you were me?

Well first, you need to tell him, why he should believe you will not do, whatever you did to get in trouble, ever again.

What steps you have taken to get yourself squared away.

What have you done, since you got in trouble, to make yourself a better soldier ?

What extra training you have done?

What have you done educationally since then to improve yourself.

What extra responsiblity you have agreed to take on since then?

You cannot just go in his office and tell him, i know I was wrong, i'll never do it again, and i haven't done anything out of the ordinary to improve myself since then.

You need to be pro active.

1. Think about why you did what you did. Think about why you don't want to do it again?

a. Do you want to make the military a career? if so, tell him that.

2. What exactly have you done, to make yourself a better person and soldier since then?

a. Have you taken any class's online, any clep test, any career development courses?

b. Have you earned any additional military qualifications? Taken any Military correspondence courses to improve your job knowledge?

c. You should always be taking atleast one correspondence course if you want to stay in the military.

3. Have you ask your leadership for any additional responsibility?

a. There are always extra jobs that need doing, have you volunteered to handle any of them?

If you cannot say yes to all of these questions, why the heck not ?

These steps aren't just something to do , to get a past due promotion.

They are also what sets a good soldier apart from someone just putting in their time.

And will help in any future promotion boards.

hey it is not imposable I was denied promotion when I was in ait because I got in a fight and almost got thrown in jail when I got to my first duty station My commander asked why I had not been promoted and I told him then for the next month I showed him that I was not a trouble maker and that I work hard I was promoted with a back date to when I was suppose to be promoted originally then a month after that I was promoted again it is all what you set your heat to do

start off with admitting you screwed up before, you have learned your lesson and then show him that you have taken that to heart and that you have striven to be a better soldier since then.

above all BE HONEST. don't try and justify you past actions that got you into trouble, don't try to blame somebody else, don't try to make yourself the victim. Man up, accept the lumps and then promise to do better.

it would be helpful if you can show sustained superior performance since you got into trouble..

Talk a bit about the trouble and what you've learned from it - how you can become a better soldier, etc.

What rank are you going for? Some are automatic...depending on time in grade.

Promotioned is earned on your performance not on which glib answers you give your boss.

You try to bull shine him he will know, he has heard it all before.
