Because the Jewish calendar is Lunar-solar and based on the phase of the moon, whereas, the USA like most other western calendars follows a solar cycle.

Israel is 5,767 years old .They had their calendar 1000"s of years before many countries including the USA. However they do use both calandars. They are are a 1st world country.

Unless you're reffering to the Jewish calender, which is based on lunar activity.
So basically, it's different because the main religion is Judaism, which has its own special calender with its own holidays etc.
