Because a former subletter to my old apartment was stupid and duplicated too many of the apartment keys, I was left with extra ones. I didn't want to throw them in the trash and risk some homeless people finding them.

(My apartment had a lovely view of the dumpster--homeless people and other types often scavanged through the trash to find stuff--I have to admit, people threw out lots of good things!)

However, I do not know what to do with these old keys. I've moved away from that apartment, but it seems like such a shame to throw them away. Suggestions?

What I have been told is if you give them to a locksmith, they get "credit" for sending them back to the manufacturer (who melts the metal down again.)

Otherwise, the other creative uses that have been suggested sound fun - I like the idea of wind chimes, but you'd need more than just two or three keys!

try giving them to a grocery corner store, perhaps in an area where people don't know where you live. Places that make new keys cut old ones into another shape and may use yours
good luck

The time you have spent thinking about what to do with them far outweighs the 10 cents worth of metal in them. Toss them in the trash.

Unless the keys were marked with an address there would be no way of connecting them with a particular apartment if someone found them. They are small but if you are recycling any scrap metal include them with it.

I had a bunch of old keys to locks that didn't exist anymore so I made a wind chime out of some of them. It was fun and actually didn't sound to bad.
