There are various stages of precancerous cells. ASCUS, LGSIL, HGSIL, AGUS in that order from bad to worst. When you go for the colposcopy, you will undress like you do for your pap. The doctor will swab a diluted vinegar solution on your cervix (it doesn't sting or burn) and then look through a high powered microscope. If there are clusters of abnormal cells on the surface of your cervix they will absorb the vinegar solution and show up white. The doctor can take a teeny tiny sample of those cells for biopsy. Most people don't even feel the biopsy, others say it feels like a pinch. The one test that most people find uncomfortable, is called an ECC. The doctor will take a scraping of the inside of your cervix. It feels like you are having instant menstraul cramps but it only lasts for about 15 seconds and then it's over. The even better news is they only do the ECC once during the course of your treatment. The only time you would need a hysterectomy is if you ignored your follow up appts and the cells developed (over time) into cancer. You'll most likely be seen by the doctor every 4-6 mths for the next couple of years or until you get 3 normal paps in a row. You need to be vigilant about your follow up care! Take care of yourself, get plenty of rest, eat well, exercise and if you're smoking....stop! Smoking increases a woman's chance for developing cervical cancer. Oh, and take your Mom or best friend to your upcoming appt with you. There is nothing at all wrong with that and having someone there for moral support is always nice :) Good luck to you!

I had a coposcopy yesterday and it really did not hurt. But they had to do 4 biops. and the medicine they used to stop the bleeding burned for hours. There was some cramping but after taking Ibuprofen it was better. I am glad that I went and had it done, this is my second one because the first doctor told me I needed a hystroectomy. It never hurts to get a second opinion even if your insurance will not cover it. I am waiting for my results to come in. The first doctor I saw was a man and the second a woman, does this make any difference, I dought it but the woman doctor did take more time to explain what was going on with my PAP results and why a second coposcopy was necessary. Believe me after I left her office I did feel better about getting the 2nd coposcopy and I am not as worried as I was the first go around. Also my name is David and I am a woman (parents wanted a boy really bad) I am 39 and have never had children, my husband has a vesctomy.

A colposcopy is a way of checking exactly what is going on after an abnormal pap smear.

Results of this test will dictate further treatment if needed.

It is possible that you will require nothing more than further monitoring and will correct itself, others require only minor surgery.

This could be the reason you have failed to concieve.

Dependant on how extensive the treatment you require is, it is possible that you will be able to concieve in the future.
