Are you talking about a .22 caliber rifle? If so, yes they would die. My father worked at a cattle feed lot and they used to butcher some of their own steers and cows. It's all about placement, I've seen a 1,200 lbs steer die instantly from a .22 bullet.

Well if you stop to consider the US military used 22 LR pistols in the Vietnam war for the Recon teams and some of the Special Forces operations.
Then as you consider that the Israeli anti-terrorist teams prefer the 22 LR as a primary weapon used in most hostage situation.
There are a few cases where people have lived when shot in the brain cavity with 22 LR and survived but not many.
One State Trooper two miles south of Tulsa Okla. In the late 70s Was shot point blank 6 times with a 22 LR and then the assailant pulled the Troopers 357 Magnum and shot him 3 more times.
All 9 shot went through his brain, it only took 6 months before that Trooper was back on the job.
But I would bet well over 90 % shot in the head with a 22 LR die.
So I would say yes it will kill someone.

Jessica, I haven't tried head-shots since I was a kid shooting cotton-tail rabbit and hares. They flip-flopped a lot after getting head-shot. Not pretty. Back in the Seventies I came up on a medium-size Western Diamondback rattlesnake. All I had in the car with me was an old 1910 German Mauser pistol in 6.35mm (.25 Auto). Being a South Texas boy I knew better than to let a rattlesnake go to maybe bite me or someone else later. I fired a single shot at the rattler and was amazed to see a small round hole right in the middle o the snake's head. It jerked once and then remained perfectly still (most unusual for a snake). I saw the rim of the hole begin to bleed until it formed a single red drop of blood where the hole was. The snake was dead-dead, as dead as can be. I've never seen a rattler die so quickly and I've never again tried a head-shot. I didn't that time either, I just got luck Jessi. Luv, H

I worked in the emergency room for a couple of years and there was a incident involving a guy playing Russian roulette with a 22 caliber pistol,he was dead before he made it to the ER.The 22 is deadly at close range, the police that came to the hospital with this guy said that the 22 lacks the power to fully pass through the head and as a result lodges in the brain or tumbles around actually causing more damage than a higher caliber round which would pass right through. They also commented on how the 22 was the weapon of choice for some murderers because its lack of a loud report and the damage it casuses

as the other person above me said yes probably about 90% of the time. The thing with .22 caliber bullets is that they bounce around inside you. In 1 case someone had been shot with a .22 LR and there was an entry wound and no exit wound and they couldn't find the bullet in him. Using a standard .22 LR cartridge it could definatly kill someone even if you shot them in the torso.

I work in a hospital (trauma) and see ppl live with 45. cal bullets to the head and shotgun shells to the head. It just depends. Knowing my luck I'd die from a head shot by a 22 but yet a gang member lives through multiple gun shot wounds.

Over hear in the uk the .22 is used as a humain killer for dispatching cattle/sheep.
Like the first contributer states, its all about where its placed on the head.
As you can imagin a beasts skull is larger and stronger than a humans.
On the othere hand its also the facter of range that has to be conssiderd

Unless the stats have changed, more people have been killed with this caliber than any other ( except for wars).
I have been to 3 suicides involving .22 LR bullets. Believe me, they didn't have to give it a second shot.

Depends on where the bullet goes in, how it performs once in and how your luck is running on the day. I have shot several very large pigs front-on in the skull with a .22RF, they died instantly, as would a human I imagine. There are numerous reports of people being shot in the head with large caliber bullets and surviving, as I said, it depends on your luck. Hopefully, neither you or I will ever have to put it to the test.
