Hi Jordyn Rettler - As most dogs have an allergy or two as well as being "a little" overweight, I would say you have 6 to 10 more years, maybe even more! To be honest with you, there is no telling how long your dog will actually live. Let me give you an example of what I am trying to say: I have read where some large breed dogs like the Rottweiler usually live anywhere from 8 to 13 years of age. More often than not they pass away by the age of 8. (I am not saying that they don't live longer!) Their bodies are so large and muscular that by that age they usually cannot hold all that weight on their joints anymore. And then there are the smaller breeds, like Chihuahuas. These pests, Eeer pets can live well into and beyond the teens. It's not uncommon for a small dog like this to live to see 20. Do I know of one personally - No. Have I read that a Chihuahua can live to be 21 - Yes. However I have no reference to back that up. Some dogs live much longer than they usually should, while others pass earlier. I really believe your dog will be by your side for a very very long time. =o) Enjoy the "Now!" It won't last forever. My Black Lab Mix is 13 - he will be 14 in May 2011. I enjoy everyday with him. No matter what! =o)

Generally twenty is very old for a dog; and not many reach that age (cats fare a little better). Fourteen is old age; but it depends on the breed. Some purebreeds have shorter live spans; and mixed breeds often live longer. Size plays a role, too; with the smaller breeds living longer (I once had an Irish Wolfhound, and their life expectancy is only about twelve)

Bigger dogs live from 8-10 or even more years. Little dogs live a bit longer. Small dogs like toy poodles or chihuahuas can live 20+ years.
The record was a herding dog who lived 29 years. WOW

The toy breeds often live into their teens, sometimes 20's. I know one chihuahua that lived to be 27. Large breeds 10-12. The very largest breeds about 8-10.

My vet says the record is a poodle that lived to 21 or 22.
In general small dogs live longer than big dogs.
And dogs live longer now than they did in the 1950s, probably because we do things like have them get regular checkups and brush their teeth.

Hey, depends on breed and size. However, I would say the average would be 13 - 15 years. Take care :)
