I really want to add a small sheer cap sleeve to my strapless gown. My question is, do I attempt to buy the sleeve myself and just have the seamstress sew it on, or ask her to make one for me? Is that beyond her scope? Do you think she would charge me an arm and a leg? (She is a regular seamstress, not in a bridal salon).

Also, I have a $6,000 couture gown....do you think I would be butchering the look?

Thanks for your help!

yes, I would think that any seamstress could do that & for a nominal fee - you might be able to do it yourself as well - if you could find the lace sleeves - if you just "tack" them on, you'll know quickly whether they look okay or not on your dress

I answered your other question about this as well. I'll reiterate my opinion here. I wouldn't do it. The look and feel of the dress would be altered. Why would you want to go to David's Bridal to add a cap sleeve on a $6,000 couture gown. I think it is beautiful and I wouldn't do a thing to alter it. Why do you want to? Would a wrap or shawl suffice instead of adding a cap sleeve? It really is a very beautiful gown, how would you feel if you added the sleeve and then discovered you hated it? The dress would most likely be ruined if you had to remove it.

Go where you bought this expensive dress and ask them to place a sheer cap sleeve on the strapless dress. This is an easy alteration and readily be done with no problem. You would not be butchering the look of the gown because the gown is simple in fabric design. If you feel she is not capable, bring it to a dressmaker (not in another bridal store), and ask her to make the cap sleeve.

Yes, a good seamstress who is comfortable handing the rest of your alterations on your gown should have no problem attaching a small, cap sleeve to the gown.

However, I would keep it VERY simple. Your gown doesn't have much embellishment (if any) on it. Go with a simple, silk organza with a simple rolled hem. It shouldn't be horribly expensive, it's less difficult than adding a bustle.

My friend added cap sleeves to hers and it looked beautiful. If the dressmaker has the cap sleeves that you can buy separate, then buy them and I am sure your seamstress will have not problem sewing them on. For an experienced seamstress that should be a piece of cake. You may want to ask her what the best option is maybe she can save you money buy making them herself.

Good luck!

First off it is a very beautiful gown and yes you can add cap sleeves if you want the only place I know that can do it is Davids Bridal and its not sewn in they place little snap buttons inside the gown , if you don;t like it you can just unsnap and take the sleeves off.

If they do it at David's Bridal then they can do it for your dress too. Maybe you can buy it from Davids and have your seamstress sew it on for you.
