Legally, a passport. If you are in possession of that, you are acknowledged as a citizen belonging to that country as it is an official government document that certifies one's identity and citizenship and permits a citizen to travel abroad.

You can pledge allegiance to another country or to its monarchs, or even kill for a country and it's belief but it still won't make you a citizen without a passport.
