Sleep apnea is a temporary cessation of breathing while one is sleeping. It's often caused by being overweight, a deviated septum, or poor sleeping position. One symptom of sleep apnea is snoring and sluggishness during the day.

Your partner needs to visit a doctor to see what might be causing the problem.

Sleep apnea: You can't breath while you sleep due to the position of the nose/throat, so you snore, choke, make lots of annoying sounds, and get horrible sleep.

There's tons of solutions, some are as simple as those breath-right strips you put on your nose. I know one person who just had to lose like 30lbs so his neck didn't weigh down on his throat while he slept so badly.

You can cope by making sure he knows how damn annoying he is to you and how detrimental it is to your rest, so he goes to a doctor and finds a solution.
