What happens to someone with a green card more than three years ago? Is he/she able to renew it, or will there be big problems?

You will not have big problems. You are a legal resident and that does not expire. What expired is the card. Just go and get it renewed. You will not be deported.

The only negative effects of having an expired green card is if you try to apply for any government benefits, traveling outside of the US (only troublesome upon trying to re-enter), and the like.

However, if you apply for a job or if your current employer needs to update their I-9 records, it will be a problem when all you have is an expired card.

I had to do a ton of research on this, when my sister-in-law had a green card about 5 yrs past the expiration date. I had all this info confirmed on the website I cited below, and I also called immigration and spoke with a live person to be sure.

It really isn't any trouble at all to file the paperwork and renew. Remember, once you are granted permanent residency, it can't expire, only the card does.

Take a deep breath, you are fine. But, there's nothing worse than having an emergency and then trying to fix it, since the process can be slow (expired card or not). So fix it now.

You may have a problem renewing it.

Green Card holders (permanent residents) with expired Green Cards may be considered "out of status" and may be denied entry into the United States. It is vital to keep your proof of permanent residence current and valid. If your Green Card was issued over 10 years ago, you should check the expiration date printed on the front of the card. If your Green Card is expired your should renew it immediately.

The "Green Card Renewal Information and Application Guide" was developed to help a United States permanent resident (Green Card holder) complete and file his or her own Green Card renewal application without the assistance of an immigration attorney. The application guide contains detailed filing instructions and all the required application forms. This step-by-step-guide will help you submit your Green Card Renewal application as efficiently and quickly as possible.

You should download the Green Card Renewal Guide (below) if one or more of the following applies to you:
Expired Green Card: If your Green Card is expired, you should submit your application immediately.

Within 6 Months of Expiration : If your Green Card is going to expire within 6 months, you should submit your application immediately. Backlog at USCIS offices may delay the issuance of your new Green Card. Early submission is highly recommended.

This person is in violation of the law, and is technically illegal. Since we don't know where this person is now, or the reasons why it was not renewed, we cannot answer you in more detail.

I guess some of these other answers are living proof that nobody is enforcing Immigration law anymore. What happened to asking questions? Perhaps this person is no longer in status, or not even living in the U.S.? This person may be in detention for all we know. There are always two sides to every story, and I stand by my answer.

Thousands would like to come in his/her place, and would gladly keep a card current.
