Tenu has the closest answer here...
Just to clarify.
If you are married, then having a kid does not get you more money.
If you are not married and are of a low rank not eligible for housing allowance, you just became eligible if you have custody of the child, so it is not technically being paid more, (but it is). You are just provided with a housing allowance to get your own place as opposed to ship or barracks.
If you are not married and you have a kid and you can not claim the child as your dependent. Such as if a guy gets a girl pregnant but does not plan on marrying the women or even being there to raise the kid. The military does pay small stipend to the mother of the child. It is an allowance on top of regular pay. Never seemed fair to me...
The last scenario is if you are already receiving housing allowance as a single military member, your housing allowance will change to the with dependents status, if you have custody of child.
So only in out of the ordinary situations will a kid increase your allowance money.
Your normal marriage, then having kids will do nothing. The marriage alone will be what pays you more.
If 2 service members get married, one gets the housing allowance with dependents and one gets the single housing allowance. It is good to be married to another service member, especially in place like San Diego, where the allowance is very high.

The only time you get more money is when you're stationed overseas and you are collecting COLA
The more dependents the more dollars.
And of course adding more dependents for tax purposes but in the end you may wind up owing the IRS so my advice claim 0 dependents and you get more out of your tax return :)
Excuse me Robert,
where does the military pay child support to a single mother? I have plenty of friends who have a child or children with soldiers and don't get a dime not even from the father of the child!! The child support is determined by the state or country where the child lives and not by the military.
And as far as I know anybody that signs up for the military who has dependents with them is eligible for BAH if they don't live on base. This privilege is not earned by time or grade.

You get paid if you have dependants. Meaning if you are married and/or have kids. You do not get paid more per child as a lot of people think. You are allotted more benifits to help support your family. You will recieve housing money & food money in addition to your base pay. The food money if actuallyfor the service member but you recieve it if you don't live in the barracks becuase you can no longer eat free at the chow hall.

For Navy-The military member has to put the child on the page two and will be paid a higher allowance for housing. The member has to provide proof of paternity if the child is out of wedlock.
However, the diff between single and w/dependant housing allowance is not worth having kids for the money. If your a jilted ex-spouse or unmarried mother of any serviceman's child, look on the DFAS website about child support.

there are two rates of BAH.. with and without dependents. Once you are married, it jumps to the With dependents rate. it won't matter if you have ten kids and a spouse, or just a spouse, the rate is the same.
the only additional monies you are eligible for is Family Separation allowance when are away from home base more than 30 days, and that is only paid if you are married, not necessarily if you are a single parent.

just to clarify the whole child support argument..heres how that works from what ive seen in personal experience (you are all partly right) the custodial parent goes to the court and petitions for child support, the judge orders it....IF the judge orders it to be a garnishment on the servicemembers pay then DFAS gives them BAQ differential.....which they never see but pay taxes on, this money is a portion of their child support which goes directly to the child support enforcement office NOT the other parent. usually the ones that qualify for the BAQ diff are either living in dorms/barracks..or collecting single rate BAH to live off base, my husband gets it now (he only gets like $200 to go towards his over $400 a month support) and he got it when he first got divorced from his ex..but when we first got married he lost it and couldnt get it back until after we had children of our own.

Dependent Allowances
There is a dependent allowance which does not increase with additional family members. In cases with married service members, the highest ranked spouse gets the BAH with the dependent rate, and the lower ranked spouse receives the rate without dependents. Those service members without dependents receive the BAH, and married service members both receive the BAH without dependents rate.

Only if you're a single parent active duty - then you'd be able to get BAH - which is only a housing allowance.
There IS NO EXTRA PAY FOR CHILDREN otherwise.
