i live in queens, ny just got my drivers license 2 years ago at age 39. I've looked at car insurance and the rates are so high - one company gave me a quote of over $1000 a month, this was for a used car not even new. I looked at older car models and the insurance payments would actually exceed the cost of the car. does anyone have any suggestions besides moving out of new york state?

Go to Progressive.com and a bunch of other places, many of them now give competitor's rates to save you some time. But it's amazingly expensive to insure a car in NYC -- ANY of the boroughs. It doesn't help of course that you're a young driver -- I should say, an inexperienced driver!

I'm in South Florida with a seven-year-old car, my rates are about $75 a month (which is higher than I've paid before) because I've been driving 30 years now with no accidents. Your rates will come down... when you're 69! Sorry, couldn't resist.

Car insurance acts like a great friend at the time of crisis. It covers the losses made in an accident and thus saves you from paying out the huge sum from your pocket. However, there does also need to be insurance on the car itself, so the owner of the car needs to take out a policy to cover it. The extension is just there in case you need to drive the car and are not a named driver under the owner's policy. One thing to bear in mind though is that you are only getting third party only cover under this extension, regardless of the cover you have on your own car, so if you have an accident, the insurer will pay out for damage to anyone else's car or property if you are to blame, but you will have to foot the bill for damage to the car you are driving under the extension yourself.

To be honest there are lots of ways to get the best quote for a car insurance., My friend used http://official-car-insurance-quotes.com/ for getting a quote in 30 seconds. They are really fast and covers the cheaper price in the market.

Consider an older vehicle that you can 'walk away from`,
and 'liability only` insurance.
Part of the problem might be 'new driver` status.
Ask if you can get credit for a defensive driver course.
$1000 /Mo. Sounds excessive even for N.Y.C.
Is there something you're not telling us?
Accident? Disability?

If you live in Queens, why do you even need a car?

But that quote sounds a bit high. Are you sure it's not per year?

Take the subway, or buy a really cheap car and only get liability instead of full coverage.
