Deciding between the Denon avr787 and Onkyo Sr575...any thoughts?...I have HD directv and HD Sony TV

Hi. As their prices and specifications are similar it comes down to the quality of the sound they reproduce. So you should listen to both and pick the one that sounds best to you.

Check out HArman Kardon also. They are supposed to be musical and good with home theater too.
