Yes, soldiers can be in Iraq for 15 months; and no, the war won't be over in the next couple of years. Even if the US were to decide to pull out immediately and let the region devolve into a real, huge, shooting war (not just minor insurgency activity), there's no way they could disengage that quickly. There's a lot of political noise in the runup to the election, but the fact is that no matter who wins next year's election, the war will continue well into 2009, and the Iraqis will still be fighting long after the US has removed its major forces, probably with some degree of in-country US military support. There simply is no way to do otherwise. The arguments are in the details, and they're both misdirected and overblown by political noise. To think otherwise shows only a level of naivete or downright ignorance of military matters.

The war ending in iraq by the end of the year is nearly impossible. And soldiers can be sent to Iraq for more than 18 Months. My last Unit just deployed for 18 Months

A soldier can be sent as long as his unit and command are deployed. As far as the war ending in Iraq at the end of the year thats just wishful thinking.

Wishful thinking. No. The surge is just starting to work. What US commanders are talking about is reducing the role of US troops in Iraq by the end of this year. Again wishful thinking. If Patreaus fails to convince the senate that we are making progress in Iraq then we will probably soon start drawing down are forces. In all liklihood if this happens then we will be out of Iraq in a major combat role by 2009.

sadly, no.
the war in Iraq hasn't even started yet.

And yes, with extended tours, soldiers have served 15 months in Iraq. Other NATO countries limit their rotations to 6 months at a time to keep their people from burning out.
I did 6 months in Afghanistan with the Canadian army, couldn't imagine 15 months.
That would suck.

The 'war' will not be over by the end of this year. We pray for 15 months.

No, the surge will be extended. A soldier can be sent to Iraq for 15 or more months. President Bush will stand tall and re-surge with longer deployments and shorter "home time".

Won't possibly end until much closer to the election. We can't take it off the campaign agenda too early or the damned Liberals might be able to find some new issue.

12 months home, 15 months in theater.
